Today was a long day at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Long Beach, California.
First the divisioning heat was held where 87 athletes raced over the 1.5 km rectangular course. Based on their finish time, the athletes were grouped together for the finals to be held on Thursday.
Then the United Team Pursuit event was held where the Special Olympics athletes were grouped together with experienced open water swimmers, channel swimmers and marathon swimmers or Olympic swimmers.
The participants included Amy Dantzler, Bill Ireland, Brent Blackman, Cara Davidoff, Jen Schumacher, Keith Dickson, Kevin Shinnick, Lenny Krazylburg, Lexie Kelly, Mallory Mead, Mark Lebovitz, Mark Tripp, Megan Monroy, and Myka Winder.
With bright sunny skies and water temperature hovering around 72°F (22°C), the conditions could not be better.
