FINA reinforces Anti-Doping effort before Tokyo 2020 Olympics

The Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA), with the cooperation of the International Testing Agency (ITA), is pleased to confirm that – as from January 1, 2021 - it expects to surpass a total number of 2'000 out-of-competition anti-doping tests prior to the start of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Despite the challenges endured during the COVID-19 pandemic, FINA and ITA developed a comprehensive, fair, and strategic testing distribution plan that will ensure an adequate number of out-of-competition tests are completed before our Aquatics athletes reach Tokyo. FINA is grateful for the cooperation of all athletes during this difficult pandemic period.

FINA will continue its rigorous efforts to fight doping in Aquatic sports through the end of the year and in advance of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) Abu Dhabi, in December 2021, and in the months prior to the FINA World Championships in Fukuoka, in May 2022.

The 2019 Testing Figures Report  published by WADA in December 2020 showed that FINA, as Testing Authority, is one of the leading International Federations for the number of tests conducted out-of-competition (see https://www.wada-ama.org/sites/default/files/resources/files/2019_anti-doping_testing_figures_en.pdf).

FINA will regularly publish updated statistics on its FINA Anti-Doping programme on www.fina.org.

Abu Dhabi (UAE) speeds up with preparations for FINA World Swimming Championships (25m)

FINA WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS (25M) 2021

Major announcements were made today, Tuesday June 29, in Abu Dhabi (UAE) during a press conference held at the Emirates Palace which was attended by FINA President Captain Husain Al-Musallam, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council HE Aref Hamad Al Awani, President of the UAE Swimming Federation HE Sultan Al Samahi and HE Mohamed Al Zaabi, Chief Executive Officer of Miral Asset Management, along with Abdullah Al-Wahaibi, Tournament Director, and FINA Bureau Member Taha Al Kishry.

The Abu Dhabi Sports Council revealed the latest developments and preparations for hosting the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) scheduled to take place at Yas Island’s hugely impressive Etihad Arena from 16-21 December this year, along with the FINA World Aquatics Convention, promising a swimming festival in Abu Dhabi this December.

Amongst the annoucements was the reveal of the event mascot - Dana the Hawksbill Turtle. As strong swimmers displaying grace and power while underwater, the endangered Hawksbill Turtle, which is native to Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island, is the perfect mascot for the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m).

The community programmes set to be implemented ahead of the event were also announced, including a Swim Safety Ambassador Programme, in which graduates can become a certified swim safety ambassador, and a Schools and Club Roadshow, which will feature appearances from Dana the Hawksbill Turtle, along with a virtual swimming activation providing an insight into the challenges faced by elite-level swimmers during championship races. There will also be activations at Yas Mall, Open Swim sessions and Olympic Watch Parties, while anybody wishing to get involved in the event can sign up to become a volunteer.

In addition, two Emirati wildcard participants who will represent the UAE at this year’s FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) have been revealed. Youssef Al Matrooshi, 18, and Layla Al Khatib, 15, will be the first Emirati athletes to be selected raising the challenge to face elite international swimmers. UAE’s most promising talents have already achieved considerable success, and Al Matrooshi will represent is country in the 100m free at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

FINA President Captain Husain Al-Musallam said: “We have great faith and trust in Abu Dhabi’s plans for hosting the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) later this year, and the announcement of the operational readiness, Emirati wildcard athletes and the official event mascot only adds to the sense of anticipation ahead of the event. Abu Dhabi has proved its long-term support and success in hosting major international events, and it will surely organise the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) with success."

“As recently elected FINA President, I’m very much looking forward to bringing the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) to Abu Dhabi for the first time, particularly during a year in which the country celebrates its 50th anniversary. We have very fond memories from the 2010 edition, brilliantly held in Dubai."

“I am sure both Youssef and Layla will undoubtedly make the UAE proud. They are a source of inspiration for all aquatic athletes in the country and in the region. Having represented my own country as a swimmer, I know the sacrifices which need to be made in order to compete at the highest level.”

HE Aref Hamad Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, conveyed the regards of His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, welcoming Captain Husain Al-Musallam, President of FINA in Abu Dhabi. He noted that hosting the event is a result of the support of great leadership and a mission to develop the sports sector which is reflected in economic, tourist, and community development.

“Hosting an international event of this stature reflects the UAE’s and Abu Dhabi’s position and pioneering role in the return of normal life to society after the challenge witnessed by the world.

"We are excited to host the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at one of the leading venues on Yas Island, Etihad Arena, and we look forward to welcoming almost 1,000 elite short-distance swimmers from all over the world, especially as it comes after the conclusion of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which adds more excitement to the competition in Abu Dhabi.

"The announcement, which combines the UAE’s wildcards, the Championship’s mascot, and the accompanying community activities, represents a significant step in the preparations for this important event. The reveal of Dana the Hawksbill Turtle, the event’s official mascot, celebrates the UAE’s rich heritage in aquatics, and represents an important step in the overall event narrative. We are confident this will be a fantastic way of engaging a young audience across the country in the lead-up to the event.

“We welcome all sporting delegations to take part in the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), and the sessions during the FINA World Aquatics Convention. With its successful track record in hosting and organising large events safely, Abu Dhabi is fully ready to welcome both events this December.”

Sultan Al Samahi, President of UAE Swimming Federation, added: “I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the impact of the Championships on swimming in the UAE, and the country’s reputation for staging world-class sporting events. Hosting the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) is a great honour for both Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Not only does it provide fantastic entertainment for the watching public, but it also presents a huge opportunity to enhance the growth of swimming and sporting excellence in the country.

“Over the years, Abu Dhabi has successfully hosted several swimming events, including the FINA High Diving World Cup and FINA Open Water Swim World Cup. Every event we successfully stage further enhances the UAE’s reputation as the region’s hub for international sports.

“The standard of coaching has also improved to the extent that we now have Emirati swimmers competing in major events on the world stage, and we look forward to cheering on our own swimmers this December at Etihad Arena. We look forward to watching them compete on home soil when the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) comes to Abu Dhabi in December.”

Originally scheduled for 2020, the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) will feature 46 finals over six days. Great Britain Alice Dearing’s Olympic qualification makes history

Alice Dearing, 24, made history in 2021 by becoming the first black woman to represent Great Britain in swimming at the Olympic Games.

Open water talent Dearing ranked 4th at FINA Marathon Swim Qualifier 2021 in Setubal (POR) on Saturday June 19, securing an Olympic berth in 2h02m01s20.

The British athlete just missed the podium in Setubal behind Kate Sanderson of Canada who came third for bronze in 2h01m58s40.

This is the most motivated I have ever been in the sport. A medal in Tokyo would be incredible obviously. If I can inspire anybody, a little black girl or boy, to get in the water and give it a try, I’ve done myself proud!”

Dearing was amongst the 15 female swimmers who clinched one of the remaining spots and qualified for the Games (complete list available here).

In addition to becoming the first black women to represent Britain in a swimming event at an Olympics, Dearing is set to become only the third black Team GB swimmer.

In an interview with BBC sport, Dearing said: “I have been the only black swimmer on Team GB for about five years now. It is kind of sad because we are in 2021 and I really wish I wasn’t. I have always dealt with it and told myself that these are the circumstances that I am in.”

Determined to break the stereotypes, Dearing said: ”For me, swimming is a life-saving skill. It can literally save your life. The fact that people brush this aside and ignore it, is concerning.”

“I have heard a lot of people on TV saying that black people can’t swim because they are too heavy. But it is not the case, you’re really not too heavy. It’s a complete myth.”

“I want to use my experience to show people that it is possible to swim being a black person, being a black woman with afro hair. It is completely possible,” Dearing, who swims nine times a week, concludes.

European Junior Diving Championships, Rijeka (CRO) - Russia tops the medal chart

Courtesy: LEN

Russia retained its top spot on the medal table at the European Junior Diving Championships in Rijeka. The Russians swept all synchro titles and grabbed three out of the four platform golds last week. The Italians and the Brits also offered fine performances, while Sweden may have found another female diving star.

After the painfully lost 2020 season, LEN was determined to restart the agegroup competitions this summer and first the young divers could return to the boards to enjoy another great edition of a junior European Championships.

At the outdoor pool of the marvellous Kantrida complex in Rijeka, 17 events were contested in the usual format: the juniors and the youths competed separately in the individual events, while the synchro and the jumping finals were open for all participants.

Russia dominated the week as their talented athletes swept all four synchro events and three out four platform finals. Italy’s new generation took both 1m and 3m titles in the youth category among the boys and girls alike – Elisa Pizzini made the double here –, while the Brits offered a fine overall performance, grabbing medals in both age-groups, including two golds.

Sweden may have found a new diving queen in Emilia Garip Nilsson who won the 1m and the 3m events among the juniors and might continue the great traditions set by Olympic champion Ulrika Knape and her daughter, European gold medallist and five-time Olympian Anne Lindberg.

While super-power Germany had to settle for a silver and two bronzes this time, Jules Bouyer delivered a great victory for France in the junior 3m. Spain also enjoyed some fine days with five medals altogether and in a rare scenario host Croatia and Romania also clinched a bronze apiece during the championships.

The LEN age-group championships roll on, this week features the artistic swimmers’ event in Malta and the girl’s U15 water polo Europeans in Szentes (HUN), while next week Rome will host the swimming showcase in the magnificent Foro Italico complex.

World Triathlon partners with OnePlan to help streamline event planning for LOCs

As part of its mission to reduce event costs and open up triathlon-hosting to more cities and National Federations, World Triathlon has teamed up with the award-winning event planning platform OnePlan, designing a tool to help ease the workflow of LOCs and simplify the staging of the world’s biggest triathlon races.

The site planning tool will allow for highly accurate and collaborative planning between the World Triathlon Operations team and Sports department and the LOCs, where everything from interactive 3D mock-ups right down to barrier placement and quantities can be set up. By combining mapping and visual planning tools, the result is a considerably more hands-on and manageable approach, also allowing less-experienced LOCs to be guided through every step of hosting World Triathlon events safely and efficiently and reducing need for time-consuming site visits.

The ‘OnePlan for Triathlons’ system can be used - for free - by any triathlon organiser around the world.

“The benefits of using OnePlan will be felt immediately by all our stakeholders by enabling us to have every element of every event visible in one place, right down to the smallest details,” said World Triathlon Sport Director Gergely Markus. “Hosting triathlons requires a lot of collaboration from many areas. By using OnePlan, we can reduce time and costs for our LOCs while offering the vital reassurance that all the necessary elements are in place, making hosting World Triathlon events in major cities and new regions more attractive, more straightforward and far easier to manage.”

Commenting on the partnership, OnePlan CEO Paul Foster said, “Our partnership with World Triathlon will deliver a consistent approach for LOCs to plan triathlons, meaning significant time and cost savings, plus sustainability benefits, by reducing the need for site visits. Designed by World Triathlon and powered by OnePlan, any triathlon organiser worldwide can now use the platform to plan and manage their events.”

The Americans are 169-5 dating to December 2015, not dropping a game at an Olympics, World Championship, World Cup or a World League Super Final in that span.

The U.S. won a believed-to-be record 69 consecutive games from April 2018 to January 2020. Since that one defeat, it won all 16 of its games.

The U.S. hopes to become the third nation to win three consecutive Olympic water polo titles, joining the Hungarian men (2000-08) and British men (1900-20). Women’s water polo debuted at the Olympics in 2000.

Adam Krikorian has been head coach since 2009 with a bevy of talent at his disposal. The most prominent player is Maggie Steffens, a member of every title team in the 2010s at the Olympics, worlds, World Cup and World League.

Johnson made her Olympic debut in Rio as the starting goalie and the first Black woman to play on a U.S. Olympic water polo team. After Rio, she took a break from the national team to write her 80-page senior thesis at Princeton, graduating in 2017 and returning to the program. She was MVP of the 2019 World Championship final, an 11-6 win over Spain.

Of the 13 players, 11 are from California. Johnson is from Miami. Haralabidis is set to become the first woman known to be born in Greece to compete for the U.S. at an Olympics in any sport, according to Olympedia.org.

The U.S. Olympic men’s water polo team will be named at a later date.

FINA President signs two pioneering agreements with Bhutan and South Africa

In June 24, only two weeks into his new mandate, FINA President Captain Husain Al Musallam signed an agreement with the Bhutan Aquatics Federation (BAF) to build the first ever swimming pool in Bhutan, located on edge of the Himalayas mountain range.

As part as the Pools for All Programme, an initiative launched in 2019 and intended to ensure that all FINA National Member Federations have access to the best possible aquatic facilities to promote aquatic sports, FINA will finance and supervise the construction of the pool in the country’s capital, Thimphu. The pool will be located at 8200ft /2400m, making it one of the highest in the world and the first in the country. With this project, Bhutan becomes the first Federation benefiting from this Development Activity programme, an area of strong focus driven by President Al Musallam.

After thanking FINA for the support, the Bhutan Aquatics Federation said: “We are confident that under the leadership of Captain Husain Al-Musallam the development of aquatic sports will be taken to even greater heights. The BAF looks forward to working closely with FINA for the development of aquatic sports in Bhutan.”

The second agreement signed today covered the creation of a new FINA Development Centre in Franschhoek, South Africa.

FINA teamed up with Swimming South Africa to form a hub for the development and growth of Aquatics in Africa that will welcome FINA Scholarship Programmes, as well as Coaches and Officials Education and Certification Programmes.

Swimming South Africa President Alan Fritz said: “We are very grateful to FINA and FINA President for the support and for delivering this significant project. Aquatic sports in Africa, and in our region in particular, will truly benefit from this new Development Centre and we intend on boosting the performance of the African athletes.”

These two latest initiatives underline Al Musallam’s vision to strengthen all Development Activities and provide assistance to all FINA National Member Federations in need, without discrimination. FINA Executive Director Brent Nowicki also took part in the signing ceremony this morning at the FINA HQ in Lausanne.

As the continent is speeding up with Olympic preparation, South Africa recently qualified two athletes (Michelle Weber and Michael McGlynn) for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Marathon Swimming event. Namibia also clinched a historic qualification for the Games with Philip Seidler securing the Africa slot at the stake at the recent FINA Olympic Marathon Swim Qualifier in Setubal (POR).

World Triathlon - Aviles will host the 2021 World Triathlon Duathlon Championships in November

World Triathlon is pleased to announce that the Spanish city of Aviles will host on November 6-7 the 2021 World Triathlon Duathlon Championships, an event that was due to take place in Almere (Amsterdam) but had to be rescheduled and moved to a different location due to the covid restrictions in the Netherlands. Aviles will play host not only to the elite, U23 and Junior races, but also de Age-Group Duathlon World Championships.

Aviles will repeat as host of the Duathlon World Championships, after a successful event in 2016, where Richard Murray (RSA) and Emma Pallant (GBR) were crowned duathlon world champions. It is the 6th time that a Spanish city plays host to the World Triathlon Duathlon Championships, after Gernika (1997), Gijon (2011), Pontevedra (2014), Aviles (2016) and Pontevedra (2019).

“We are extremely pleased to return to Aviles for what I am absolutely sure that it will be a magnificent event”, said World Triathlon President and IOC member, Marisol Casado. “The city of Aviles is perfect for an event like this one, always ready to welcome athletes from all around the world. I want to express all our gratitude to the Major, Marivi Monteserin and the Spanish Federation, for stepping up and show their willingness to host this event in these complicated times so that all athletes can enjoy the Duathlon world championships this year”, she said.

The event will be run under strict COVD guidelines approved by the Spanish Federation and World Triathlon, and more details of the calendar, distances and registration process will be announced in the next weeks.
