For 7 consecutive years, Steele Whowell has been working hard to raise money for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
Whowell combines his appreciation and support for the Special Operators with his passion for the open water at the Swim for Freedom event, held this year on August 2nd.
The 8.2-mile (13.2 km) swim, either attempted as an individual or a relay, starts at Lake Geneva Beach and ends at Gordy's in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. "People can swim as far as they can, raising funds as they go. All proceeds will go to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. Not only is it a great cause, but it's also a lot of fun. We will be having a tailgate post-swim party right near the finish line, and we'll also be raffling off some great prizes.
The Special Operations Warrior Foundation provides full scholarship grants and educational and family counseling to the surviving children of special operations personnel who die in operational or training missions and immediate financial assistance to severely wounded special operations personnel and their families."
Swimmers come from all over the United States to participate. Dan Beeman from California and Dan Projansky from Illinois both agree, "It is awesome and a worthy cause. The party includes a floating barbeque and keg party hosted by former swimmers at Notre Dame."
