First medal event were contested today in diving
competitions at the 16th FINA World Masters Championships in Kazan. 22 gold medals were up for grabs
at the Aquatics Palace across the 27-85 age groups. 24 women and 36 men took
part in the 1m springboard events.
The
events started at 9:00 in the morning and ended at 15:00. The competitions took
place in the same swimming pool where professional athletes competed during the
FINA World Championships. Diving fans supported all participants from the
stands.
First
gold medals were claimed today by the Russian divers: Andrey Chuyko (25-29
years old), Vadim Makarov (30-34) and Pavel Polyakov (35-39). All in all, the
tournament hosts earned four out of twelve gold medals in the men’s events
while Germany came second with three golds. The USA, Ukraine, Belgium,
Lithuania and Austria took one gold medal each. By the way, the maturest
athlete (80 years old) is Heinz Weisbarth from Germany; he collected 131.5
points for four dives. His announced dives had 1.4-1.9 degrees of difficulty
(DD). He received rather high points for all his dives – the average score for
a dive with the lowest DD is 5, some judges even gave him eights. Another
diver, John Deininger of Lithuania, who performs in the 75-79 age group,
even got a nine. Although, the highest point (9.5) was given to Iraklis
Sakkalis of Greece in the 35-39 age group.
A
85-year-old female diver from the United States, Ibo De Belausteguigoitia,
deserves special praise. She became the maturest athlete in the women’s
diving events and picked 122.35 points for her three dives. Having taken five
gold medals, the Russian team took the lead in diving events. The USA, Germany,
Lithuania, Canada and Australia took one gold medal each. The largest number of
participants (4) competed in the 25-29 age group. The age groups from 35-39 to
85-89 were represented by one athlete. Dives with the highest degree of
difficulty were executed by Australia’s Eliza Cole who competed in the 25-29
age group and placed first, leaving her nearest opponent 70 points behind.
A total
of 80 sets of medals will be contested within 3 competition days. The men’s and
women’s 3m springboard events are expected to start tomorrow at 9:00 in the
morning.
