The 3m springboard finals concluded at the Aquatics
Palace today. The Masters divers from 25 to 85 years old competed for 23 sets
of medals. It seemed just yesterday the athletes trained, when today they showed
really impressive results and many intricate acrobatic elements.
The competitions started in the pool at 09:00 and
finished at 15:00. Women
in the age groups from 50-54 to 85-89 years were first to execute their dives,
men from 25-29 to 45-49 years were the last to perform. The athletes were to
demonstrate from three to six dives depending on the age. Entry was a common
mistake. All in all, the judges gave high scores for the technical elements of
the finalists.
Representatives
of eleven age groups among women (23 athletes) and twelve among men (34
athletes) participated in the tournament. A total of 57 divers competed today.
25-year-old Marina Romanova from Sautin Diving School became the youngest
participant of today’s event and won bronze in her age group. The 45-49 age
group of men faced stiffer competition, as six divers had a chance to make the
podium. Jeff Stabile from the US Tropic Lightning Diving Team was almost 40
points ahead of the other contenders.
The best score (499.25) was picked up by 31-year-old
Russian Vadim Makarov from the Moscow Masters Diving Club, who earned an
advantage of almost 180 points compared to the US athlete’s. It is no surprise
as Makarov scored tens for his brilliant last dive.
29-year-old Eliza Cole of the Australian Arrows Diving
Academy finished her six dives, DD ranging from 2.1 to 2.8, with a combined
result of 335.45 points. The silver medallist fell almost 80 points short. The
winner’s final result became best among the women on Day 2. By the way, the
Australian diver did not perform on the 1m springboard that confidently the day
before. The judges were not impressed with her first half of the programme. As
we can see, the athletes are raising the bar from day to day.

distributed as follows:
