Jack Burnell Doubles Up In Balatonfüred – Hungary by WOWSA

Not only did Great Britain's Jack Burnell win the second consecutive stop on the FINA/HOSA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup meeting in Balatonfüred, Hungary yesterday, but his teammate and Olympic medalist Keri-Anne Payne also finished third the women's side of the World Cup equation.

Burnell's teammate Payne earned bronze behind Brazil’s Ana Marcela Da Cunha who won in 1:50:36.68 and Hungary's Eva Risztov.

In the final international race before the all-important FINA World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia, this bodes well for the British team that will look to qualify at least two and possibly as many as four athletes for the Olympic 10K final at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The Loughborough swimmer has now won back-to-back titles following his success in Mexico in May.

“Without doubt, I wanted to win it, it was always the plan from the start,” said Jack Burnell. “It was a good warm-up for the World Championships, I’m very satisfied, I felt really comfortable there, I felt I was sharp, I was ready to go. The World Championship should be a good race.”

Spyridon Gianniotis of Greece finished a strong second and is looking good in preparation for the Olympic qualification race in Kazan - as he has been doing since 2000. The 4-time Olympian (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012) is looking to extend his career at least to July 2016 where he hopes to compete in Copacabana Beach at the 2016 Rio Games.

The FINA World Swimming Championships start in Kazan, Russia on July 24th.
