WORLD TRIATHLON Pontevedra will host the 2025 World Triathlon Multisport Championships

World Triathlon’s Executive Board has decided to award the Spanish city of Pontevedra the hosting of the 2025 World Triathlon Multisport Championships, the second time that the home-town of triathlon legend Javier Gomez Noya will host the event.

“We are really grateful to return to Pontevedra with another major event, only two years after celebrating this summer’s Championships Finals and further proof that the city, the Spanish Federation and the local organisers are committed to our sport. I am absolutely convinced that the combination of their experience in organising events, the welcoming people of Galicia, the stunning setting and the combination of pristine beaches and wonderful nature will once again make the Pontevedra Multisport Championships one to be remembered,” said World Triathlon President and IOC member, Marisol Casado.

The Multisport World Championships will see duathlon, cross duathlon, long distance triathlon, aquathlon and cross triathlon world championship racing organised together during a week-long festival. Pontevedra, the home of five-time World Champion Javier Gomez Noya, is a seasoned host of major triathlon events being the venue of the 2019 Multisport Championships and many Europe Triathlon events. This September, the city will host the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Finals that will crown the best triathletes of the world.

The World Triathlon Multisport Championships made its debut in the World Triathlon calendar in 2017 in Penticton (Canada), a successful event that was followed by Fyn (Denmark) in 2018 and Pontevedra (Spain) in 2019. The event had to be cancelled in 2020 due to the impact of Covid and in 2021 was split in three different locations: Almere (The Netherlands) hosted the Long Distance and Aquabike races, while the Duathlon World Championships were organised in Aviles, Spain, and the Cross Triathlon and  Aquathlon  World Championships took place in El Anillo, Spain.

The 2022 World Triathlon Multisport Championships were also split, with Targu Mures (Romania) hosting the Duathlon, Cross Triathlon and Cross Duathlon, while the Aquathlon and the Long Distance Triathlon and Aquabike World Championships took place in Samorin, Slovakia. In 2023 the event will travel to Ibiza (Spain), while in 2024 the city of Townsville (Australia) will welcome the Multisport Championships.

World Triathlon Cups

The World Triathlon Executive Board also confirmed that World Triathlon Cup Yeongdo, that had to be postponed in February, is now confirmed for 5-6 August.

Another event added to the 2023 World Cup calendar in Asia is the well known host of Weihai, returning to the circuit after last hosting in 2019. The original intention was to stage these two events back to back, but unfortunately it was not possible to find a common date for both events. The World Triathlon Cup Weihai will take place on 26-27 August over the standard distance.

The third addition to the calendar is a World Cup in Tanger, Morocco, to take place on 1 October and held over the sprint distance. World Triathlon will now have a major event in Africa for the first time since 2019, meeting a strategic goal of the Executive Board to hold an event on all five continents.

A final change in the calendar is to move the World Triathlon Para Cup event in A Coruna to three weeks later, now to be held on the weekend of 1-2 July, and it will now be the first event in the Paralympic qualification period.
