Excellent early response by Federations to first U23 European Championships

With the preliminary entry deadline now passed, a total of 412 athletes from 36 nations have already submitted entries for the first edition of the LEN U23 Swimming Championships which takes place in Dublin on 11-13 August 2023. With 3 months still to go, LEN expects athlete numbers to exceed 500 athletes, with teams from the USA, Africa, Asia and South America joining their European counterparts in the competition.

 

New dates and venue confirmed for 2023 European Championships in Water Polo

LEN officially confirmed new tournament dates and location for the next edition of the European Championships in Water Polo. The event will take place from 3 to 16 January 2024 in Netanya (Wingate Institute), in Israel. The change in location from Tel Aviv to Netanya was made to address financial and technical challenges of hosting the event in Tel Aviv on the original date, and to reduce costs for participating countries.

 

Deadline for expressions of interest to host European Swimming Masters SCM Championships set for 28 April

LEN has prepared a set of key requirements to serve as a guide to potential hosts of the European Swimming Masters SCM Championships, which will take place in late 2023.

A document containing the key requirements for hosting the event has been circulated with a deadline for first response of 28 April 2023. More detailed information will be circulated in due course.

 

LEN Coaching Clinics

In close cooperation with World Aquatics Development programme, LEN has set up, for the first time, a programme of coaching clinics for 2023, managed by the Coach education commission together with technical committees, covering four different themes:

1 For Top Level Elite Competitors: “Bridging the Gap between science and training”  satellite event organized with World Aquatics and Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming, at the University of Leipzig, Germany, from 5-7 September 2023.

2 Elite Coaches education

LEN has now set 8 coaching clinics, to take place during events this season, as part of ongoing efforts to support athletes and coaches with appropriate educational tools. Full details of event logistics, topics and speakers will be communicated to Member Federations in due course.

Process of accrediting LEN approved labs and training centres finalised

A new process to accredit LEN approved sport science laboratories and training centres has been finalised and LEN Member Federations will be informed with full details of the programme, including requirements, in May.

EPSI Annual Conference to promote European sport innovation

The European Platform for Sport Innovation (EPSI), working with LEN on the energetics project in aquatics, is organising its Annual Conference from the 5-7 June in Ponta Delgada, Azores (Portugal), in association with Sport Azores.

The Conference, titled “The Island of Sport Innovation” will take place from the 5-7 June physically in Ponta Delgada, Azores (Portugal) several B2match sessions will also be organised as well, both physically and virtually. As well as debates during the EPSI General Assembly there will also be the opportunity to meet and greet, exchange and network with the European innovation sport community as well as relevant European policymakers.

First ever livestream of LEN Water Polo competition draws

On 1 April, for the first time ever, LEN carried out live public draws for the next editions of the LEN European Water Polo Championships Qualifiers and the U17 and U15 European Championships

The draws for the 2024 LEN European Water Polo Championships Qualifiers and 2023 age-group European Championships took place in Sabadell prior to the final matches of the Champions League Women Final Four tournament.

The draws were broadcast publicly via live stream on the LEN website and were conducted by the chair of the Technical Water Polo Committee, Angel Moliner, assisted by several Spanish WP athletes.

 

LEN Water Polo Strategy Review close to completion

A special LEN Working Group has been set up, led by LEN President Antonio Silva, to deliver the final report of the Water Polo Strategic Review currently being conducted by the London based agency The Sport Consultancy. Joining the LEN Water Polo Sport staff, LEN Bureau Liaisons for Water Polo and members of the TWPC Committee are two players Margarita Plevritu (GRE), Philippe Perone (ESP) and top coach Sandro Campagna (ITA).

The final review will be completed in May, by the end of the 2022-23 season, and presented to the LEN Bureau for consideration and further action. The review includes all aspects of the sport, both at national and club level, including calendar, marketing, communications, and broadcasting as well as liaison with World Aquatics and European clubs.

 

Rome 2022 Open Water 25 km medals to be presented in Piombino

The medal ceremony for the Rome 2022 Open Water Championships (25 km) will take place during the second leg of the LEN Open Water Cup which takes place in Piombino (ITA) on 13 May.

Delfina becomes LEN Water Polo Referee Official Supplier

Delfina, a world leading swimwear manufacture, has become the official sponsor of LEN Water polo referee attire. The new agreement will see Delfina supply referees and delegates with branded clothing, which will be worn at all LEN club and national water polo competitions, from now through to May 2024. The recent Champions’ League women’s Final 4 tournament was the first LEN event equipped by Delfina.

 

LEN Global Strategy Review

Under the direction of Executive Director Patrice Coste, an update of progress on key strategic goals for 2023 of each of LEN’s functional areas has been finalised and will be presented to the LEN Officers for discussion.

 

2022 Accounts closed – external audit planned for May

The 2022 LEN accounts closed with an unaudited preliminary result indicating a surplus for the year. The usual external Audit is planned to take place in the second half of May 2023.

 

Tender opened for LEN Travel Supplier

A tender has been opened for an agency to supply LEN with travel related services for both event and corporate needs.

 

SIGA meets LEN in Nyon in quest for SIRVS bronze status

As part of LEN’s commitment to good governance, transparency, and accountability, we are in the process of adapting the Sport Integrity and Governance Alliance (SIGA) Universal Standards on Sport Integrity via the SIGA Independent Rating and Verification System (SIRVS).

SIRVS aims to assess and rate a sports organisation’s compliance with the SIGA Universal Standards on Good Governance in Sport, Sports Betting Integrity, Financial Integrity in Sport, and Youth Development and Child Protection in Sport.

As part of the process, representatives of SIGA were at the LEN HQ in Nyon on 20 April to meet with representatives of the LEN Bureau and Office staff who provided information and guidance as part of the “audit” process of SIRVS, with the goal of achieving SIGA’s bronze standard for International Federations.

 

Learn to Swim Conference

LEN has officially opened the bidding procedure for hosting the 2023 LEN Learn to Swim Conference, which will be held from 11-12 November 2023. More details related to the successful host and the Conference programme will be shared in due course.
