Shane Ryan has claimed Ireland’s second medal at the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships in Glasgow this evening. Ryan, World Bronze medallist in the event in 2018, produced an outstanding performance to again finish in third place in 23.12, faster than his heat (23.16) and semi-final (23.21) swims earlier in the day. The 25-year-old joins a growing list of Irish medallists from this Championships including Mona McSharry, Grainne Murphy, Andrew Bree and Barry Murphy.
A delighted Ryan commented ‘I’m really happy that I’m bringing home something to Ireland. It’s been a tough day of racing but I’m happy to come away with the bronze and to end the meet with a strong finish as part of the Ireland Relay’.
Russia’s Kilment Kolesnikov won the gold medal in 22.75 with Germany’s Christian Diener claiming silver in 23.07.
Just minutes after winning the medal Ryan was back in the pool with team-mates Conor Ferguson, Darragh Greene and Jordan Sloan for the Men’s 4x50m Medley Relay. The team had set a new Irish Record of 1:34.14 to progress to the final in eighth place and were just on that time in the final, Sloan bringing them home in 1:34.24 for sixth overall.
Danielle Hill ended her week with another Irish Record, her fifth of the week, in the 50m Freestyle Semi-Final. The Larne swimmer had set a new standard of 24.76 in the heats, breaking 25 seconds for the first time, and went on to lower that time to 24.44 for ninth place overall, just outside of the final placings.
Brendan Hyland, swimming in his first ever senior international Final clocked 1:55.06 in the 200m Butterfly to finish in 8^th place.
Overall this week the group of 19 swimmers set 20 National Records (fifteen Irish Senior Records and four Irish Junior Records), competed in ten semi-finals, nine finals and will take home two medals courtesy of Ryan and Mona McSharry in the 50m Breaststroke.
National Performance Director Jon Rudd, Team Leader for the Irish Team said, “These five days of racing in Glasgow has seen this group of Irish athletes very much start to come of age as a high performing international team. Our impressive statistics at this Championships speak for themselves, in terms of lifetime best performances, the podiums and the finals, and the numerous ground-breaking National records that we have achieved; to see two Irish relays make European finals at senior level is also exceptionally pleasing. The positivity, support and connectivity within this team is the strongest I have ever seen it and this stands us in great stead as we prepare to galvanise as a swimming nation for our Olympic Trials in Dublin in April, a further European Championships in Budapest in May (which will see us challenge to cement one or more Olympic relay berths) and, ultimately, the Tokyo Olympic Games in July. A wonderful week for Irish swimming.”
Commenting on the past five days, Swim Ireland National Senior Team Head Coach Ben Higson commented ’The athletes were challenged this week to race with “intent” and a “willingness” to be competitive across the five days. With so many national records and top performances it is evident that they are making positive strides at international level. Our attention now turns to the National Short Course Championships in Dublin next week, which offers an opportunity to race in-front of a home crowd and to refine some of the racing skills & behaviours that they will need come the Olympic trials in April.’
Next up for this group of swimmers will be the Irish National Short Course Championships at the National Aquatic Centre, Dublin from Thursday 12^th to Sunday 15^th December.
