Swim Ireland's Annual Women in Sport Conference Goes Online for 2020

Swim Ireland’s #WePlay Inspiring Girls in Sport Conference enters its fourth year in 2020 and in practicing what we have learnt from our #WePlay speakers in facing adversity, we have adapted to make this year an online series. This year we are delighted to announce Kinetica as sponsors with Sport Ireland continuing their support also, through their Women in Sport Initiative.
Insightful, inspiring & motivating video's will be released every Wednesday and Friday across Swim Ireland's social media channels, starting April 22^nd. The videos will include athlete panel discussions and educational pieces for athletes, coaches, parents and supporters of any age from all sports.
Ireland's elite athletes from a wide range of sports including Ellen Keane, Phil Healy, Leona Maguire, Sanita Puspure, Katie Mullen, Darragh Greene, Rhys McClenaghan and many more will come together, whilst apart, to share their experiences and advice from their sporting journey so far, including how they are keeping healthy and active during this difficult time. We will also hear from experts such as Sport Ireland Institute’s Head of Performance Nutrition Sharon Madigan.
After each episode of #WePlay Online, viewers have the opportunity to pick the brains of Ireland's sporting elite by posting questions which the athletes will then answer through a Q&A session every Friday!
Speaking about the launch Head of Communications at Swim Ireland Trish Mayon said ‘Thanks to the support of Kinetica and Sport Ireland we are delighted to be delivering the #WePlay Series straight to a screen in your home! The conference has had great engagement in the past and we were keen to deliver in 2020, despite the difficulties we are all facing. We are excited to have Kinetica on board and believe that through the collaboration #WePlay will be a huge success this year.’
Sorcha Madigan, Business President Kinetica said: ‘As an inclusive Irish brand, we are thrilled to be able to support our partners Swim Ireland on the #WePlay women in sport initiative. The online conference series is exactly the type of content that is needed during these uncertain times, to uplift and inspire a broad audience with compelling stories and insightful advice from athletes who have experienced and overcome so much.’

Ireland’s Danielle Hill took her impressive short course (25m) season through to long course (50m) with a smashing new Irish Record in the 100m Backstroke at the McCullagh International in Bangor this morning.
Larne’s Hill had held the previous mark at 1:01.08 from last Summer, she lowered that to 1:00.90 today for silver at the McCullagh Meet. Kathleen Dawson of Stirling, a European medallist, won gold in 1:00.28.
Loughborough’s Luke Greenbank took the win in the men’s 100m Backstroke in 55.02. National Centre Dublin’s Shane Ryan finished with silver in 55.18 after leading for 75 metres of the race, while Larne’s Conor Ferguson completed the podium in 55.50.
Marlins Mona McSharry took her second gold and third medal of the meet in the women’s 50m Butterfly Final. McSharry touched in 27.14 ahead of Loughborough’s Harriet West (27.46) and Templeogue’s Ellen Walshe (27.79).
Calum Bain was the only swimmer to break 25 seconds in the men’s event clocking 24.60. The Cookstown swimmer won ahead of Loughborough’s Zac Aitchison (25.01) and Ards’ Michael Hewitt (25.20).
McSharry was back on the podium in the 200m Breaststroke for a silver medal behind Loughborough’s Molly Renshaw (2:26.79). The twenty-year olds time of 2:28.22 was just off her own Irish Record (2:27.44). World silver medallist James Wilby of Loughborough took the honours in the men’s event in 2:11.23, followed by Stirling’s Ross Murdoch in 2:13.04 and Irish Junior Record holder Eoin Corby in 2:14.66.
Loughborough’s Max Litchfield added to 200m Butterfly gold with a dominant performance in the Men’s 400m Individual Medley Final where he was 10 seconds ahead of silver medallist Cadan McCarthy (4:34.45) of National Centre Limerick in 4:19.81.
There was a British sweep in the women’s 200m Freestyle Final as Loughborough’s Abbie Wood took the win in 1:59.96, the only swimmer under two minutes. Wood was followed home by Sunderland’s Alys Thomas in 2:00.54 and Stirling’s Aimee Wilmott (2:00.96).
Stirling’s Duncan Scott bettered his time from heats to 1:47.06 to win the men’s event, Scott’s time the fifth fastest in the world this year. Bangor’s Jack McMillan was impressive to take silver in 1:48.28, his second fastest time ever in the event, only a 1:48.00 from World Championships in 2019 faster.
Daniel Jervis of Sunderland added 1500m Freestyle gold to the 800m he won yesterday as he cruised to the win in 15:09.35 ahead of Northampton’s Jackson O’Rourke (15:25.21). Hill, Greenbank and Scott Star on Final Day in Bangor - Swim Ireland

Ards Swimming Club claimed the Dave McCullagh Memorial Trophy for best Irish team as the McCullagh International ended in Bangor this afternoon. The four-day meet was run to replicate the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with heats in the evenings and finals in the mornings. The competition attracted a number of Irish and British stars as both countries gear up for Olympic Trials in April.
After a 100m Backstroke Irish Record yesterday, Larne’s Danielle Hill equalled her 50m Freestyle Irish record of 25.29 to take gold ahead of Marlin’s Mona McSharry (25.83) and Maria Godden (26.78) of Kilkenny. Cookstown’s Calum Bain won the Men’s 50m Freestyle in 22.88 adding to 50m Butterfly gold from Saturday.
McSharry was back in the pool for the women’s 50m Breaststroke final where she closed her meet with another silver medal in 31.66. Loughborough’s Sarah Vasey took the win in 31.12.
Adam Peaty continued his dominance of the 50m Breaststroke with a 27.01 second swim to claim gold. Stirling’s Ross Murdoch posted 27.48 for silver while 200m Breaststroke champion James Wilby was third in 27.72.
Luke Greenbank won his second Backstroke gold in the 200m Final in style this morning. The Loughborough swimmer cruised to victory in 1:57.51, the only swimmer under two-minutes and the second fastest time in the world this year. Larne’s Conor Ferguson was second in 2:01.59 with National Centre Dublin’s Sean Scannell completing the podium in 2:04.20. City of Glasgow’s Katie Shanahan won the women’s event in 2:14.06.

Scott held off Edward Mildred (53.04) and Brendan Hyland (53.96) in the 100m Butterfly in 52.84. In the 200m Individual Medley, Scott got the win in 2:00.05, Loughborough’s Joe Litchfield just .28 behind for silver in 2:00.33
Commonwealth Games Champion Alys Thomas added 100m Butterfly gold to her 200m in 59.23, one of only two simmers to break one minute, Charlotte Atkinson the other in 59.36. Loughborough team-mates Abbie Wood and Siobhan Marie O’Connor battled for gold in the women’s 200m Individual Medley Final with Wood coming out on top in 2:12.45 ahead of O’Connor’s 2:12.83.
Swansea University’s Daniel Jervis claimed his third gold in the Men’s 400m Freestyle Final in an impressive three minutes 49.98 seconds, Jervis had already won 800m and 1500m Gold. Ards’ Amelia Kane completed the same sweep as Jervis winning the women’s 400m Freestyle Final in 4:23.54.
In today’s junior events, Chelsea and Westminster’s Edward Whittles won 200m Individual Medley gold in 2:14.53 ahead of Derwentside’s Thomas Maskell (2:17.82). Whittles topped the podium again in the 200m Breaststroke in 2:34.55, Benji Cummings of Swilly Seals just behind in 2:35.62. Scotland’s Stefan Krawiec then won the men’s 200m Butterfly ahead of Whittles (2:17.78) in 2:15.61.
Ards’ Grace Davison claimed her fourth and fifth gold medals of the meet in the girls 200m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke. In a fantastic battle with Templemore’s Rosie Whitten, Davison touched in 2:15.52 in the 200m Freestyle with Whitten just behind in 2:16.04. In the 200m Backstroke, the 13-year-old clocked 3:30.88 ahead of City of Derry’s Maeve McClean (2:35.54).

Jon Rudd, National Performance Director said, "This last four days of competition has provided all of the athletes here with an excellent racing platform into their upcoming Olympic Trials, whether that be our Irish version (1^st – 5^th April) or the British version in the weeks ahead. The environment for racing in Bangor is first class and the format of the competition along with the slick and professional operation of it could not be better for what coaches and athletes are looking for at this stage of the season. Irish athletes now have approximately five weeks into the Irish Open Championships, where our National Teams for the 2020 Olympic Games, the European Championships and the European Junior Championships will be determined, with an element of our Performance programme taking one last opportunity to race before then at the Edinburgh International Meet (12^th – 15^th March). Swim Ireland are in a good place right now and if supporters of Irish swimming haven't got their travel plans
in place for the Olympic Trials at the NAC in April, they should do so, as it will not be one to miss!"

Swim Ireland - Ellen Walshe First Sub-60 Irishwoman in 100m Butterfly

Ireland’s Ellen Walshe became the first woman to break the one-minute barrier in the 100m Butterfly this evening as the 18-year-old smashed the Irish Record of 1:00.21 in 59.54 for gold at the Flanders Swim Cup in Belgium.
Walshe took almost a second off her own best time of 1:00.44 from the 2019 Irish Open Swimming Championships to knock Shauna O’Brien’s 2015 record from the books.
It’s a promising start to the year for the Templeogue swimmer after taking 200m Butterfly gold last night in 2:14.15.
Walshe is part of a team of nine Irish swimmers at the Flanders Swim Cup where Shane Ryan, Darragh Greene, Conor Ferguson, Danielle Hill and Niamh Coyne have all made the podium.
On Saturday evening, Limerick’s Eoin Corby broke the first Irish junior swimming record of the year in the 50m Breaststroke when he clocked 28.33 in the final at the Geneva Challenge in Switzerland where a squad of 15 Irish junior swimmers are competing.
The swimmers key focus for now is Ireland’s Irish Open Swimming Championships, April 1^st – 5^th at the National Aquatic Centre, Dublin, which will serve as Olympic and Paralympic Trials and as a qualifier for this Summer’s European Senior and European Junior Championships.

Swim Ireland - Fantastic Fifty! Irish Swimmers Total 54 Records in a Fortnight

Eight further records fell on the final day of Swim Ireland’s Irish Short Course Swimming Championships in Dublin today bringing to a close an outstanding two weeks for Irish swimmers where 55 records were broken.
National Centre Dublin’s Niamh Coyne had the stand-out swim of the day as she crashed through Rio 2016 Olympian Fiona Doyle’s 200m Breaststroke Irish Record. Coyne took almost a second off Doyle’s 2015 time of 2:23.64 touching in 2:22.77 for the gold.
In the Men’s 200m Breaststroke Final it was a clean sweep for National Centre Limerick swimmers with Eoin Corby leading the charge in yet another Irish Junior Record, his fourth of the week and seventh in a fortnight. Corby lowered his own time of 2:09.02 from last week’s European Championships to 2:08.04 for gold ahead of Liam Doyle (2:10.52) and Uiseann Cooke (2:14.71).
In tonight’s Ireland Relay Exhibition swims, all four national teams went under the previous Irish bests. The senior women dipped under the 4-minute mark combining for 3:59.95, knocking over 15 seconds off the 1992 record of 4:15.90 while the juniors blitzed the previous best of 4:25.58 in 4:12.38. In the Men’s event, the seniors broke a 2018 record of 3:27.23 in 3:26.60 while the juniors annihilated the previous standard of 3:56.15 in 3:37.10.
In this morning’s club relays three new Irish Records were set with the women from Aer Lingus breaking Ards’ 2017 record of 1:55.01 in 1:53.99. In the Men’s event gold medallists Bangor broke their own record of 1:38.75 in 1:38.34 while silver medallists Limerick, also broke their own junior record (1:45.11) in 1:43.80.
Danielle Hill collected her fifth national title of the week in the Women’s 50m Backstroke Final with a time of 26.90, the Larne swimmer has had an incredible two weeks breaking seven Irish Records. In the Men’s final Ards’ Paddy Johnston topped the podium in 24.77.
In today’s distance Freestyle Finals, Amelia Kane and Daniel Wiffen added 1500m Gold to 800m Gold from earlier in the week. Kane dipped below 17 minutes for the first time in 16:59.29 while Wiffen clocked 15:12.59.
The final individual event of the championships saw Kilkenny’s Naomi Trait and National Centre Dublin’s Robbie Powell collect gold in the 200m Freestyle. Trait touched in 2:00.25 while Powell stopped the clock on 1:45.39.
National Performance Director Jon Rudd said, "The four days in Dublin bring to an end a very exciting and productive fortnight for Irish swimming. We thought that we had achieved something special when we returned from the European Championships last week with 2 medals and 20 new Irish records but to break another 34 this week to make it 54 in total is quite exceptional, particularly when we are re-breaking several of those records that are only a few days old. There has been a buzz in and around the NAC this week; more clubs and coaches are progressing their athletes than we would have seen before and there is a rising depth amongst our ranks in most events. There has been some great work done by Irish swimming this month and we look forward to Olympic year and how this confidence because of our progress can transfer from January onwards".

Swim Ireland commence the Olympic year with athletes racing in Geneva and Antwerp in January before a final preparation event at the McCullagh International meet in Bangor in February which will match the Tokyo 2020 format (evening heats, morning finals). The Olympic & Paralympic Trials take place in Dublin from 1st - 5th April and this is the sole event from which athletes can qualify to the Olympic Team in individual events. The LEN European Championships in Budapest in May provides Ireland with a final competition from which they can qualify Olympic relays before the Olympic Games themselves take place in Tokyo in July.
