The 2021 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships started in Poznan, Poland



The 2021 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships started today in Poznan, Poland, with the heats in 1000 and 500 metres distances. On the opening day, the Hungarian team showed the strength producing the fastest times in almost one third of today's events.

After day one of the 2021 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships it is clear that young Hungarian paddlers will be favourites number one to finish the championships at the top of medal table.

Almost one third of today's best times in heats were set by Hungarians. Levente Kurucz was the fastest in men's junior K1 1000 meters heats, Dorina Decsi was the best in junior women's K1 1000 metres event, Agness Kiss in junior women's C1 500 metres event, Alida Gazso in women's U23 500 metres heats, Sara Fojt - Laura Ujfalvi in women's junior K2 500 meters event, Laura Gonczol - Reka Opavszky in women's junior C2 500m event, Karina Biben - Olga Bako in women's U23 K2 500m event and women's junior K4 set the fastest time in 500 metres heats too.

Hungarians will face strong opposition in German team. Tobias Hammer produced the fastest run of the day in men's K1 U23 1000 metres heats, Katharina Diedrichs was the fastest in women's U23 K1 1000 metres event, Albert Fritzsche - Anton Winklemann were the best in men's junior K2 1000 meters heats and Pauline Jagsch set the fastest time in junior women's K1 500 metres heats.

Russian team could be very satisfied with today's performances too. Maksim Karataev won in junior C1 1000 metres heats, Dumitru Rotaru and Vladimir Afonin set the best time in men's junior C2 1000 metres heats, while Zakhar Petrov and Kirill Romanov produced the best times in men's U23 C2 1000 and 500 metres heats. The fastest was also Russian junior K4 men's 500 metres crew.

Danish kayaker Thorbjorn Rask was the fastest competitor of men's U23 K1 500 meters and the second fastest in K1 U23 1000 metres heats. Daniela Cociu (Moldova) was the fastest in women's U23 C1 500 metres as well as in C2 500m heats together with Maria Olarasu. Petr Fuksa from the Czech Republic was the fastest paddler of the day in men's U23 C1 1000 metres heats. Radoslav Stefanov - Veselin Valchov from Bulgaria were unbeatable today in men's U23 K2 1000 metres heats, Alex Graneri from Spain was the fastest in men's junior K1 500 metres heats, while Florin Dringa - Cosmin Nitu from Romania produced the best time in men's junior C2 500 metres heats. Polish K4 crew celebrated a win in today's men's U23 500 metres heats, while in the last event of the day, women's K4 U24 500 metres race, the crew from Belarus set the fastest time.

On Friday, the championships will continue with semifinals in 500 and 1000 metres events in the morning part and 200 metres heats in the afternoon part of the programme.
