The Rio 2016 synchronised swimming competitors were
welcomed this morning, August 14, at the Maria Lenk outdoor pool, presenting
clear blue water again.
The
first day of preliminary final at Maria Lenk involved the free routine, with a
field of 24 teams.
Russia’s
synchronised swimming duet, Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina, finished
first of the preliminary round this morning with an excellent 98.0667 points.
The big
favourite for the gold were followed by Chinese Huang Xuechen and Sun Wenya,
who managed to score 96.0667 points.
The
third place of the preliminaries went to Japan’s Yukiko Inui / Risako Mitsui
(94.4000).

famous Spanish duet Ona Carbonell and Gemma Mengual, who took the silver medal
in the event at London 2012, ranked fourth on this first day, while the
Ukrainians were fifth.
All of
the 24 duets will perform a preliminary technical routine on 15 August. This
score, combined with the score from the free routine preliminary, will
determine which of the 12 duets will advance to the final.
