Kurt Fearnley elected Vice Chairperson of IPC Athletes’ Council

Multi-Paralympic and world champion Kurt Fearnley is taking on a new role as Vice Chairperson of the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) Athletes’ Council.
The Australian wheelchair racer was elected to replace the Netherlands’ Elvira Stinissen. The Dutch sitting volleyball player resigned in May for personal reasons, concluding a journey she began since being elected at the London 2012 Paralympic Games; she became Vice Chairperson in 2014.
Fearnley, a three-time Paralympic champion in the T54 category, will serve as Vice Chairperson until December 2022. He joins Chairperson Chelsey Gotell, along with six elected members, three co-opted members and a representative from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission.
In his role, Fearnley will work with Gotell on the IPC Athletes’ Council direction and main projects, including the implementation of the Strategic Plan that was published in 2019.
Fearnley said: “It’s a privilege to continue to the progress that the IPC Athletes’ Council has been undertaking over the years through this new role. Elvira had been a great Vice Chairperson and I hope I can fill the role to the best of my ability.
“I hope to be able to continue the work in engaging with our fellow athletes and bringing that voice into the organisation. I’ve been amazed at the work ethic of our current Chair, Chelsey. I’m continually impressed with how the entire IPC under President Andrew Parsons’ leadership has reinvigorated the engagement and amplified the athlete voice through the development of Athlete Forums and the
continued engagement through online meetings with athlete representatives worldwide.
“It’s more important now than ever to come together as athlete reps in our National Paralympic Committees, Regional Committees and our specific sports representatives to ensure we learn and grow together over this incredibly challenging time.”
Chelsey Gotell said: “I am delighted that Kurt has been elected Vice Chairperson of the IPC Athletes’ Council as he is a Paralympian who brings so much calming experience, knowledge and passion to everything he does.
“Kurt has championed the rights of Para athletes throughout his entire career and this new role will help him to continue doing this.
“I would also like to thank Elvira for eight years of wonderful service to the IPC Athletes’ Council, six of which she spent as Vice Chairperson. We wish her and her family all the best for the future.”
The IPC Athletes’ Council is the collective voice of Paralympic athletes within the IPC and the greater Paralympic Movement. As the liaison between IPC decision-makers and Paralympic athletes, the IPC Athletes’ Council works to provide effective input into decision-making at all levels of the organisation.
To this end, the IPC Athletes’ Council works to ensure effective athlete representation on all IPC committees and commissions as well as to create other opportunities for athlete representation both within and outside the IPC.
Philip Dorward, IPC Head of Communications

International Paralympic Committee brings Para sport delivery programmes back in-house

To further boost the development activities provided to its members, and to create greater efficiencies, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has from 1 July 2020 brought back in-house the delivery of development programmes previously undertaken by the Agitos Foundation.
Launched by the IPC at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, the Agitos Foundation has acted as the IPC’s development arm and has served as the global leader in delivering sport opportunities for persons with disabilities. Over the last eight years, it invested millions of Euros into Para sport development projects around the world and delivered a range of programmes aimed at strengthening the Paralympic Movement at all levels.
Agitos Foundation programme staff will form a new Membership Programmes division within the IPC, a team headed by Felipe Rodrigues.  The team will continue to deliver a range of successful programmes including the Grant Support Programme, NPC Development Programme, I’mPOSSIBLE, Road to the Games, Proud Paralympian and En sus Marcas, Listos…Inclusión. The Agitos Foundation will remain active, serving as a fundraising vehicle for IPC development programmes.
Mike Peters, IPC Chief Executive Officer, said: “Bringing the delivery of Para sport development programmes back in-house from the Agitos Foundation allows the IPC to better focus on key elements of its mission and support members to enable Para athletes to achieve sporting excellence.
“The IPC Membership Programmes team will continue to deliver the same range of development programmes that have benefitted our members in recent years, but by having the delivery in-house we aim to increase greater co-operation and efficiencies with other IPC functional units.”
Felipe Rodrigues, IPC Acting Head of Membership Programmes, said: “Since its launch in 2012, the Agitos Foundation has benefitted the whole IPC membership, developing Para sport opportunities for hundreds of thousands of Para athletes, coaches, officials and administrators around the world.
“This fantastic work, making for a more inclusive world through Para sport, will continue for our members, with the only difference for them being that the work is undertaken by the IPC rather than the Agitos Foundation.
“This move will help us provide a better range of joined-up services to the IPC’s 200+ members. We have seen first-hand the positive impact Para sport development has on Para athletes and with driving social inclusion, and we aim to continue transforming lives in the future.”

Navarino Challenge 2020: European long jump champion Miltos Tentoglou honors Kostis Tsiklitiras

Pylos Triathlon Kids & Beach Volley Tournament among this year’s activities
Athens, July 28, 2020 – The award-winning sports tourism event Navarino Challenge will be held on October 16-18, 2020 presenting new sports activities and experiences for people of all ages, in Messinia, Pylos and Costa Navarino. Loyal to its global message “sports unite people”, the event will connect people from Greece and abroad, promoting the Olympic values and “fair play”.

The Olympic sport of standing long jump is reviving in Pylos
Navarino Challenge, honoring the birthplace of Kostis Tsiklitiras, the world-famous legend and gold Olympic medalist who was born in Pylos, Messinia, will present the standing long jump activity for the first time, on Saturday, October 17. The European long jump champion, Miltos Tentoglou will be the honoree person and ambassador of this activity. The first Greek athlete to win a gold medal in this sport in European championships along with his coach George Pomaski, will provide people of all ages with an opportunity to try out their jumps and attempt to surpass Tsiklitiras’  world record of 3.47m.
In the context of his participation this year, the European champion, Miltos Tentoglou stated: “I am very excited about this event. Standing long jump was one of the most beautiful competitions and it is now considered as one of the best exercises to measure precise jumping. It is also a good opportunity for people to see and experience a real race while being entertained”.
Respectively, the top track and field coach George Pomaski stated: “In such initiatives we are always willing to participate, in order to honor and never forget the history of sports. Sports endured, stopped wars and rivalries, united continents and fought racism. Standing long jump is a very useful exercise for gymnastics, that we even use today, because it is an important indicator of the explosiveness of a jumper. It has elements from the long jump. It is important to highlight the region through our participation, as it is the place of origin of the Olympic medalist Tsiklitiras. We must never forget such athletes and we need to preserve our history”.

Pylos Triathlon Kids: Educating young people through sports
Navarino Challenge will include for the first time in its program the highly successful Pylos Triathlon Kids organized by Pylos-Nestor Municipality, on Saturday, October 17. The event includes triathlon races with the participation of children from 4 to 18 years old. At the same time, we have the pleasure to enjoy, in the context of Navarino Challenge, the successful for many years Pylos Triathlon Kids program, in the presence of our Olympic medalists, where our young athletes will have the opportunity to live unique experiences and values, such as those of "fair play” and “sportsmanship”.

FINA allocates US$ 6.4 million in a COVID-19 support plan

FINA is pleased to announce a global COVID-19 support plan in excess of $6 million USD to assist athletes who will compete in the Tokyo Olympic Games next summer, through three distinctive programmes:
•$4 million USD in grants for a minimum of 160 National Federations to provide support to athlete training, competition, and living expenses.
•$460,000 USD in grants to the five Continental Organisations to enable supplemental resources to athletes.
•$2 million USD to athletes selected to participate in the FINA Scholarship Programme, either at FINA Training Centres or at National Federation training facilities.

FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione, with the full support of the FINA Bureau, outlined a comprehensive programme to support elite athletes with medal prospects, as well as Universality athletes from developing countries.
“The primary objective of this programme is to provide direct assistance to athletes preparing to compete in Tokyo. FINA recognises the importance of support to all athletes, including elite athletes with medal prospects, as well as less experienced athletes from developing countries trying to attain Olympic qualifying standards,” said Dr. Maglione.
FINA has created and augmented these programmes to express its unwavering commitment to aquatic athletes who continue to endure hardships related to their training and competitive opportunities due to the pandemic. Previously, FINA made an extraordinary commitment to redistribute over a four-year period a substantial portion of its Olympic-related revenue. However, because so many previous plans by the National Federations and Continental Organisations cannot take place due to travel restrictions, FINA has enabled a high level of flexibility in utilisation of its financial support, with strong emphasis on direct assistance to athletes.
Additionally, the FINA Scholarship Programme will include 100 athletes from National Federations that do not currently have athletes with Olympic Qualifying Standards – 80 swimmers and 20 divers – and enable intensive training at FINA Training Centres in Senegal, Thailand, Russia, and the United States. Each athlete is eligible for up to $2000 USD monthly for living and training expenses, with world class coaches in outstanding facilities.
“FINA places great confidence and trust in the National Federations and Continental Organisations to develop creative and effective solutions for athletes who will compete in Tokyo. We have developed a simple and direct process for athletes to receive funding, and we know that this unprecedented level of financial support will enable aquatic athletes to reach their full potential,” concluded President Maglione.
