Paralympics Ireland - Fourth Place for Róisín Ní Riain on Day 2 at the Madeira 2022 World Para Swimming Championships

 

Limerick’s Róisín Ní Riain narrowly missed out on a return to the podium for the second day in a row as she finished in fourth position in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke SB13 Final at the Madeira 2022 World Para Swimming Championships this evening.

The 17 year old was the youngest swimmer on the starting blocks but she put in a determined effort to come home in fourth position narrowly missing out on setting a new personal best as she finished in a time of 1:19.26 in front of an animated attendance.

The race was won by American swimmer, Colleen Young who touched off her German rival Elena Krawzow by just 0.02 of a second. Great Britain’s Rebecca Redfern took the bronze medal as she finished in a time of 1:16.45 ahead of Ní Riain.

Róisín was pleased with her performance after such a high when she claimed a bronze medal for Team Ireland on Day 1.

Speaking after the race “Breaststroke has always been an event for me that’s just fun, but definitely coming 4th there, it just shows that if I put a lot more work into it, it could improve a lot in the future so that’s something I’ll definitely go home and have a good think about.”

Róisín will now enjoy a much deserved day off on Day 3 as Amy Sheridan will make her major championship debut for Team Ireland. Paralympic Silver Medal will return to World Championship competition as will Tokyo Paralympian Barry McClements.
