The 2022 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe
Sprint European Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, kicked off with the 1000 and
500 metres heats. Hungary, who is always considered as one of the strongest
teams at all canoe sprint championships, showed their power already on day one.
Heats in the 26 events – in 1000 and
500 metres distances – were held today on the Ada Ciganlija, and young Hungarian
athletes produced the fastest time of the day in ten events. It started already
in the first three events when Hunor Hidvegi (MK1 junior 1000m), Csanad Molnar
(MC1 junior 1000m) and Reka Nemes (WK1 junior 1000m) crossed the finish
linewith the best overall time of their respective events. Following their team
colleagues, Gergeli Lugosi-David Uhrin (MC2 junior 1000m), Reka Kisko (WK1
junior 500m), Balint Kollek (MK1 junior 500m), Panna Gyore (WC1 junior 500m),
Agnes Kiss-Csepke Molnar (WC2 junior 500m), men’s junior K4 500m crew and
women’s junior K4 500m boat also set the fastest times of the heats in their
respective events.
The host nation was also satisfied
after their main hope for the medal Bojan Zdelar recorded the fastest time of
the day in men’s K1 U23 1000 metres heats. He was fast also in 500 metres heats
where he had the third best time of day. Zdelar, however, was not the only
Serbian with the best time of the day. Dina Bacelj and Dunja Stanojev were the
fastest in women’s junior K2 500 metres heats and Serbian MK4 U23 500m crew
with Vrdoljak-Kovačević-Stojkov-Lagundzić also produced the best run of the
day.
Poland had even better score on the
opening day. One of their hopefuls for the medal Helena Wisniewska was the
fastest in women’s K1 U23 500m heats, Wiktor Leszczyinski in men’s K1 U23 500m
heats, Jakub Stepun and Bartosz Grabowski in men’s K2 U23 500m heats. Polish
women’s U23 K4 500m crew finished the day with the best time, just ahead of
Italy and Hungary.
Gabriele Casadei (MC1 U23 1000m),
Giovanni Penato-Luca Meneguolo (MK2 U23 1000m) and Sara Daldoss-Lucrezia Zironi
(WK2 U23 500m) were Italians who were on fire today and produced the best times
in their respective events.
Croatian Vanesa Tot had the best day
in women’s C1 U23 500m event, German Enja Roesseling was the fastest in WK1
U231000m heats, her teammates Tillmann Sommer and Jonas Borkowski in MK2 junior
500m heats, and Czechs Lukaš Hrabek-Jakub Niebauer in MK2 junior 1000m heats.
Spanish crews dominated men’s C2 events. Victor Montilla and Ander Aragon were
the fastest duo of the day in junior 500m heats, and Noel Dominguez – Diego
Dominguez were unbeatable in MC2 U23 500m heats.
On Friday, the competition continues
with 1000 and 500 metres semifinals and 200 metres heats.
