Ireland’s Róisín Ní Riain was the
first Irish Athlete in the pool today at the Madeira 2022 World Para Swimming
Championships. The young Limerick woman competed in the Women’s 100m S13
Butterfly Heats.
Róisín was able to secure her place
in this evening’s final thanks to a good 4th placed finish in her heat in a
time of 1:10.06. That finish means that she will return to the pool at 5:39pm
where she will race for a medal.
Reflecting on her heat Róisín said
“It’s really nice to be back racing with a crowd around us, although Tokyo was
great, it’s nice to be back racing with all the spectators so it makes the
atmosphere a lot better.”
There is further Irish interest this
evening when Amy Sheridan, who is due to make her debut at a major
championships this week, will be the flag bearer for Team Ireland at the
official opening ceremony. Amy will be joined by Paralympic Gold medallist
Ellen Keane.
