Paralympic silver medallist Nicole
Turner has returned to the podium at the Madeira 2022 World Para Swimming
Championships in Portugal. Turner’s fast start and determined finish saw her
come home in third place to secure the second medal of the championships for
Team Ireland after Róisín Ní Riain had won the first of the week on Day 1.
This was a race that Turner hadn’t
targeted but after finishing in third place overall in the heats she knew that
coming to the starting blocks that she was in with a chance of reaching the
podium
“To be honest I’m delighted, Madeira
must be a special place because every time I come I end up on the podium and to
be honest, even today, the focus wasn’t on today the focus was on Saturday, so
I think it’s always a bonus when you do well in a race that you are not
expecting to.”
Barry McClements also competed in the
evening session finals and he finished a creditable fifth against a world class
field. McClements will race twice more this week with his favoured 100m
Backstroke on Friday.
Speaking after the race Barry said
“I’m a bit disappointed because I wanted a PB in it but I’m not going to PB in
every race so I’m not going to beat myself up too much.”
