number of ranking points – LEN
World champion Gregorio Paltrinieri
has topped the end-of-season rankings for the 2022 men’s LEN Open Water Cup,
with Giulia Gabrielleschi and Ginevra Taddeucci sharing the women’s title.
The three Italians, who all won medals
at the Roma 2022 European Championships earlier in the year, each competed in
the first three races of the six-leg series.
Paltrinieri, who won the European
800m and 5km events at Roma 2022, followed up his two bronze medals in the
opening two LEN Open Water Cup races with gold in the third in Alghero, Italy.
That saw him collect 2000 points,
which was enough to edge ahead of team-mate and rival Domenico Acerenza. The
10km marathon swimming European champion finished second in the first as well
as the third leg and achieved a total of 1950.
Countryman Marcello Guidi (1750)
rounded off an Italian clean-sweep having claimed silver and bronze medals
during his 2022 campaign.
Taddeucci was the second highest
European finisher at the opening leg in Eilat, Isreal, but narrowly missed out
on the podium in her following two races. Gabrielleschi’s third-place finishes
in the second and third legs ensured the title was shared with 1750 points.
Germany’s Jeanette Spiwoks (1600) was
rewarded for two impressive victories in the final two legs (Kiel and
Barcelona) by claiming third in the overall standings.
