Day five of the LEN European Junior
Championships got underway this morning in Bucharest. Romania, with four Irish
swimmers in action and Ellie McCartney and Grace Davison advancing to
semi-finals.
McCartney may have had to wait a
little bit longer than expected to make her first appearance this week,
however, the Ards SC swimmer made up for lost time as she swam a brilliant
1:11.31 in the 100m Breaststroke to advance to the semi-final this afternoon at
15:31 (Irish time).
Speaking after her morning heat,
McCartney said: “It was a solid swim, I think it was my third fastest time
ever, so it’s good to come away with that. I have improved my performance since
trials, so that’s always good. It was unexpected because of the situation I was
in this week, I’m glad to be back for semis tonight. I didn’t really know what
was going to happen today, I just wanted to give it my all and hopefully make
it back, which luckily, I did. It wasn’t too bad for only having two days back
in the water and coming in to racing. Hopefully I can improve from my
performance this morning, looking at the videos there’s a couple bits that I
can definitely fix and work on, so it would be nice to improve the time.”
Grace Davison, has had an impressive
week to date, was the final Irish swimmer in action this morning. McCartney’s
team mate at Ards SC continued her good form swimming in the 200m Individual
Medley, recording a time of 2:20.56 to progress in 16th overall. Davison will
return to the blocks this afternoon for the semi-final of the 200m Individual
Medley at 16:03.
Both Thomas Leggett and Evan Bailey
were back in the pool for Team Ireland this morning, swimming in the 100m
Freestyle. Larne SC swimmer Leggett
finished in an excellent time of 51.62 to finish second in his heat bringing
his first ever European Junior Championships to a close in brilliant fashion,
with a new personal best.
New Ross SC swimmer, Evan Bailey
recorded a time of 51.76 in Heat 5 of the 100m Freestyle.
