On the day of a 24.4 at the French Open in Vichyover
50m freestyle and the news that Sarah Sjostrom had become the first women
ever to crack 24sec in the dash, with a 23.98 in Boras, Olympic and World
Champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo has called a halt to her 2014
long-course season.
The reason: analysis in the Netherlands has concluded
that she is simply not ready for the challenge of the European
Championships in Berlin next month and has thus withdrawn.
Her focus will now shift to the World short-course
championships in Doha in December and the World long-course championships in
Kazan next year on the way to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
The move was made after Christiaan Sloof stepped
down as Kromowidjojo’s coach. Kromowidjojo is now on her fourth coach in two
years: Jacco Verhaeren (now Australia head coach), Marcel Wouda, Christiaan
Sloof, and now Patrick Pearson. Technical director Joop Alberda and
his team of experts advised a rescheduling of the double Olympic sprint
champion’s journey to Rio.
In a statement to the Dutch media, Kromowidjojo said:
”It
has been a turbulent year and it has taken a lot of energy. I want to invest in
the next world tournaments. Therefore, a depth investment and an intensive
training is required. I am sorry that I have to let go this European
Championship, also for my teammates. My dream is to win the gold medal in Kazan
in 2015 and Rio 2016, not only in individual races but also in the relay.”
In
2010, Kromowidjojo forfeited the summer long-course season through illness
after contracting meningitis. It turned out to be a
blessing in disguise in performance terms after her preparation was
rescheduled on the way to a soaring success at London 2012. Alberda said:
”Our conclusion is that it is better for Ranomi
not go to the European Championship. She will start with a new training program
this summer and will focus on the World Cup short course in Doha in December
2014 and the World Cup long course in Kazan in 2015. This fits better in her
preparations on the road to Olympic success in Rio in 2016. It is good to
“reset” after the recent period, and to renew focus.”
