Doha (QAT) consecrates Morozov (RUS) and Campbell (AUS)
Vladimir Morozov (RUS) and Cate Campbell (AUS) were the overall winners of the 2019 edition of the FINA Swimming World Cup, after the conclusion of the seventh and final meet of the series in Doha (QAT) on November 7-9. The Russian star was the best among men, with a total of 333 points, while the Australian champion led the women’s ranking with 357 points.
This is not the first success for Morozov in this competition, as he was also the champion in 2018 and 2016, and second in 2017 and 2013. In Doha, the Russian ace won the 50m and 100m free, as well as the 50m back.
Also among men, Danas Rapsys, from Lithuania, was second in the overall ranking, concluding the series with 234 points. In his last World Cup appearance, the Lithuanian swimmer was the fastest in the 200m and 400m free. The third best swimmer in 2019 was Arno Kamminga, from the Netherlands, with an accumulated total of 195 points. Both for Rapsys and Kamminga, this is the best achievement so far in the FINA Swimming World Cup.
In the women’s category, Campbell had also her best-ever participation in the competition, concluding her season in Doha with wins in the 50m and 100m free.
The second place of the overall ranking went to Katinka Hosszu, from Hungary, with 312 points. The Magyar great consolidated her status as the best female swimmer in the history of the competition, after five consecutive victories between 2012 and 2016, and second places in 2017, 2018 and 2019. In Qatar, she won four events, the 100m and 200m fly, as well as the 200m and 400m IM.
The third best of the women’s ranking was Sweden’s Michelle Coleman (174 points), her best so far in the World Cup.
Other competitive highlights in Doha were the new World Cup Record (14:51.61) in the men’s 1500m free for Mykhailo Romanchuk (UKR), the double victories of Michael Andrew (USA) in the 100m back and 50m fly, of Yasuhiro Koseki (JPN) in the 50m and 100m breast, and of Chad Le Clos (RSA) in the 100m and 200m fly.
Among women, Kira Toussaint (NED) was the best in the 50m and 100m back, while Jhennifer Conceicao (BRA) was the fastest in the 50m and 100m breast.
The 2019 edition of the FINA Swimming World Cup comprised three clusters in seven prestigious locations, and distributed more than USD 2.5 million to the best athletes of the competition. All the meets of the series, held in 50m-pool, were qualifying events for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
You can follow the pool action LIVE or on-demand on FINAtv and daily news reports are available on FINA website during competition. Results are immediately available after each race on the FINA mobile app and on the FINA website.
