Tokyo 2021 announces new creative team structure for Opening and Closing Ceremonies

The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) announced today details of the new creative team which will design and deliver the programme for next year’s Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Following the postponement of the Games in the wake of the spread of COVID-19 and the accompanying disruptions, we are working to deliver Opening and Closing Ceremonies that will be in tune with the situation next summer. The ceremonies will still be a great celebration to be enjoyed by the athletes and watching world but will likely take a simpler and more restrained approach designed to reflect the overall simplification of the Games and the potential need to still consider COVID-19 countermeasures.

We have therefore decided to create a new team organisation that will allow us to prepare for these ceremonies more quickly and efficiently in the limited time available. The previous seven-member planning team will be replaced with a new structure. Since our announcement on 30 July 2018, they have been dedicated to a very challenging mission of preparing the ceremonies, they are Chief Executive Creative Director NOMURA Mansai, Executive Creative Director for the Olympic Games YAMAZAKI Takashi, Executive Creative Director for the Paralympic Games SASAKI Hiroshi, Creative Director KAWAMURA Genki, Creative Director KURISU Yoshie, Creative Director MIKIKO and Creative Director SHEENA Ringo.

Until the decision to postpone the Games this March, this whole team was charged with formulating the concept, the ideas and the production plans that would ensure the success of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and they contributed various ideas and production plans to help realise this. President MORI and the entire Organising Committee would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and utmost respect for their great efforts.

The COVID-19 situation is constantly evolving and the time remaining until the Games is limited. In view of the revised concept of the Games, it is appropriate to make ceremonial events and programmes simpler and have them in some way reflect and respect the world’s experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. One such attempt was the "One Step Forward - +1 Message - TOKYO2020” programme which was held in July. The programme was produced by SASAKI Hiroshi. We have re-appointed him as an Executive Creative Director.

With Mr. Sasaki’s support, we will stage Opening and Closing Ceremonies that will be remembered for many years to come as symbols of the unity and symbiosis of humankind in its overcoming of the COVID-19 pandemic.
