The first ECA European Championships
of the season 2023 will be the 2023 ECA Wildwater Canoeing European
Championships in Skopje, North Macedonia, which will kick off with an opening ceremony
on Tuesday, while the first competitions are scheduled for Wednesday.
Athletes from Austria, Belgium,
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Great Britain,
Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Serbia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Slovakia
and North Macedonia will compete for the European Champion titles over four
competitions days, between Wednesday and Saturday in a picturesque Matka Canyon
on the outskirts of Skopje.
The 2023 ECA Wildwater Canoeing
European Championships will bring the individual classic race on Wednesday,
team classic races on Thursday, sprint heats on Friday and sprint medal events
(individual and team) on Saturday.
Skopje hosted the Senior ECA
Wildwater Canoeing European Championships in 2017, they host the ECA Wildwater
Canoeing European Cup regularly and the same venue was also the organiser of
Senior and Junior/U23 Canoe Slalom European Championships in the past.
This will be the 14th edition of the
Senior ECA Wildwater Canoeing European Championships, the first senior European
championships in this canoeing discipline was held in 1997 in La Plagne,
France.
Previous championships of the Old
Continent was held in 2021 in Sabero, Spain. At this championships French
Maxence Barouh won in men's classic K1 event, Mathilde Serena Rosa from Italy
in women's K1 classic, Czech Ondrej Rolenc in men's C1 classic race, Italian
Cecilia Panato in women's C1 classic and French duo Stephane Santamaria -
Quentin Dazeur in men's C2 classic. In sprint event Belgium's Maxime Richard
claimed the European Champion title in men's K1, French Pauline Freslon in
women's K1, her teammate Quentin Dazeur in men's C1, Elsa Gaubert (FRA) in
women's C1 and Dazeur - Santamaria (FRA) in men's C2 for the double individual
crown of the championships.
French paddlers will be again among
the favourites for the medals, alongside Czech, Italian, Slovenian, German
representatives. Some of the champions from the 2021 European Championships
have concluded their sporting careers, and new champions will be crowned.
Besides the best wildwater canoeing paddlers, a well-known name from canoe
slalom, 2016 Rio Olympic medallist Matej Benuš from Slovakia is also on the
start list.

Canoe Sprint competition will be held
