Ireland had another impressive morning in the pool as the European Short Course Swimming Championships continued in Glasgow today. Following last night’s medal winning performance from Mona McSharry, Team Ireland continued to excite with Jack McMillan and Jordan Sloan claiming places in the 200m Freestyle Final, Shane Ryan a place in the 100m Backstroke Semi-Final and a flurry of Irish Records from McMillan, Ryan, Brendan Hyland, Eoin Corby, Daniel Wiffen and a 4x50m Mixed Medley Relay.
McMillan and Sloan got the morning underway in the 200m Freestyle. With no semi-final in this event, the Bangor club mates had to be at their best to make the Final with only eight progressing. Sloan, the Irish Record holder in the event was first up and touched just outside that record time of 1:43.26 in 1:43.61, McMillan then took to the blocks and lowered the record to 1:43.18, ensuring both progressed to the 5.08pm Final.
Shane Ryan went out with intent in his heat of the 100m Backstroke. The National Centre Dublin swimmer lead from start to finish, winning the heat in a new Irish Record of 50.45, the third time he has broken the record in the past month. Ryan advances to tonight’s semi-final as the second fastest swimmer behind Russia’s Kliment Koleshnikov (49.52).
Brendan Hyland joined the record train with a big swim in the 400m Individual Medley. Hyland knocked over four seconds off Andrew Bree’s 2001 Record of 4:16.26 clocking 4:12.13.
Last night’s semi-finalists Mona McSharry, Danielle Hill and Darragh Greene then combined with Conor Ferguson for the 4x50m Mixed Medley Relay where the quartet broke the 2017 Irish Record of 1:43.15 in 1:41.00 to finish in 13^th place overall.
Eoin Corby added a 200m Breaststroke Irish Junior Record to the 50m that he broke yesterday. The Limerickman took three seconds off his own record touching in 2:09.02. And in the last swim of the day Daniel Wiffen knocked an incredible 30 seconds off his best time in the 1500m Freestyle. Wiffen won his heat in the event, 22 seconds inside the Irish Junior Record (15:26.03) and just four seconds off the Irish Senior Record (15:00.88) in 15:04.47.
Also, in action today, Robbie Powell swam a lifetime best 1:46.63 in the 200m Freestyle, Danielle Hill (55.18) and Maria Godden (56.07) were both at their best in the 100m Freestyle. Conor Ferguson (51.66) and Paddy Johnston (55.70) touched in personal bests in the 100m Backstroke while Molly Mayne (1:04.13) and Mona McSharry (1:01.45) competed in the 100m Individual Medley, Cillian Melly (4:18.03) in the 400m Individual Medley and Liam Doyle (2:13.85) in the 200m Breaststroke.
