ECA Canoe awarded the 2024 European Championships

ECA's Board of Directors held a meeting and decided who will host the 2024 ECA European Championships in different canoeing disciplines. They have also appointed the technical delegates for all disciplines and new canoe sprint and canoe slalom committee members.

With the season 2021 slowly kicking off in several European countries, the ECA Board of Directors held a meeting to award the European Championships in the season 2024. The selection was difficult especially in canoe sprint where many bids were sent. At the end, the organisation of the 2024 ECA Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe European Championships was awarded to Szeged, Hungary. The venue hosted numerous major international canoeing events in the past years, however, it has last hosted senior Canoe Sprint European Championships back in 2002.

The 2024 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships will lead young athletes to Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal, another traditional venue of the big canoeing events. The 2024 ECA Canoe Slalom European Championships will be held in Ljubljana - Tacen, Slovenia. This will be the third European Championships organised on this venue, following the successful events in 2005 and 2017. The 2024 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom European Championships will be in Krakow, Poland.

The 2024 ECA Ocean Racing European Championships was awarded to Portugal and Azores Islands, but the venue will still have to pass the technical inspection. The decision on the host of the 2024 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships has been postponed following the request by ECA's technical delegate for canoe marathon, who needs to make technical inspection of the two venues first. The 2024 Canoe Freestyle and Junior and U23 Wildwater Canoeing European Championships await the bids for the organisation.

Board of Directors also voted on the technical delegates for all the disciplines as well as canoe sprint and canoe slalom committee members. Jovana Stanojević (SRB) was elected technical delegate for canoe sprint. She is the chair of the committee, while Michel Letienne (FRA) and Marika Dognerova (CZE) have been elected members of the canoe sprint committee.

Andrej Jelenc (SLO) remains the canoe slalom technical delegate and will be the chair of the committee in the next period. Colin Woodgate (GBR) also stays the member of the canoe slalom committee, while Sebastien Chaplais (FRA) became new member of the canoe slalom committee.

Ruud Heijselaar (NED) was elected technical delegate for canoe marathon, Gianluca Zannoni (ITA) stays technical delegate for canoe polo, Manuela Gawehn (GER) will continue as technical delegate for wildwater canoeing, David Szlachta (FRA) is technical delegate for ocean racing, Elena Iskhakova (RUS) is technical delegate for dragon boat, Nina Csonkova (SVK) for canoe freestyle, and Jane Gibson (GBR) is ECA's medical delegate.

Euro League/LEN Trophy/Euro Cup Draws Water Polo in Rome for the semi-finals

The draws for the semi-finals in the respective club competitions were conducted in Rome: teams in the Final Four tournaments of the Euro League and the LEN Trophy was paired, and the men’s Euro Cup semis were also determined.

Live-streamed on the web, the draws for the European club competitions were staged in the famous Foro Italico complex in Rome, conducted by LEN Operational Manager Marco Birri.

In the top women competition the two Hungarian clubs avoided each other in the Euro League semis. UVSE meets Olympiacos, just like in 2016 when the Magyar team beat the Greeks in the semis and finished runner-up, so far their best effort in this event – while Olympiacos chasing its second title after 2015. The other semi-final features the two sides which return after more than ten years – the second Hungarian team Dunaujvaros will play in the F4 for the first time since 2006, while Uralochka’s last appearance dates back to 2007.

The LEN Trophy semis will see the clash of 2016 winner Mataro and newcomer SIS Roma, then comes the ‘heavy-weight’ bout of Sabadell and Kirishi. These two claimed two Euro League trophies apiece in the previous four years, including a head-to-head final in 2018, won the by the Russians in penalties.

Upon this occasion, the men’s Euro Cup semis were also determined though here the second legs of the quarters are due tomorrow. The QFs were numbered so the winners of the respective duels shall play each other in early April in the semis. There is a potential all-Serbian clash between Crvena Zvezda and Radnicki, though here the latter team needs a miracle in Szolnok as they lost by two at home a week ago. OSC has a comfortable 6-goal advantage in Sabadell so the Magyars might already have an eye to the thrilling clash of Vouliagmeni and Mladost where the Croats try to save their single-goal advantage from Zagreb.

WORLD TRIATHLON - Norway is crowned in Andorra champion of Winter Triathlon

The day started chilly and windy in Naturlandia, and with the course covered with sheets of ice that forced some changes and a small delay of the start of the competition, and with 12 teams aligned at the start of the 2021 World Triathlon Winter Mixed Relay Championships in Andorra. And once again, Team Norway proved that they have arrived to the sport in great shape, claiming the gold medals both in the Elite and the Junior Relays.

Current World Champion Sandra Mairhofer was the one in charge of leading the Italian team in the first leg of the Mixed Relay, and she put her team in the leading position, a place that they would not abandon until the last km of the race. She managed to stay in font during her first leg, ahead of the two teams representing the Russian Triathlon Federation and Norway.

When Guiseppe Lamastra (ITA) started his first leg -1.5km run, 3.2km bike and 2.25km ski- the lead with the Pavel Andreev was of only a few seconds, enough for the eight time World champion to catch up and do the ski leg all together. The just crowned world champion Hans Christian Tungensvik (NOR) was battling with Evguenii Uliashev (RTF), Robert Gehbauer (AUT) and Viorel Palici (ROU) to stay within close reach of the leaders.

Mairhofer was again leading on her second leg, comfortably ahead of the two teams representing the Russian Federation, with Elizabeth Sveum (NOR) on the chase for a spot on the podium, but also knowing that the second team from RTF will not be considered for the final classification, according to the World Triathlon rules that only one team per country can stay in the final classification in the Mixed Relay World Championships. She tagged her teammate for the final leg in the fourth place, but Norway never gave up and Tungensvik went full gas on his final leg.

The Norwegian managed to stay in fourth place during the run and bike, to then show a superb performance on the skis, passing all the teams lap by lap. Half way trough he was chasing Lamastra for the gold, to finish the last meters of the race smiling while his teammate waited in the finish line. Behind Team Norway, Italy secured the silver medal in the Relay, with Team RTF 1 finishing in third place. Team Austria claimed the fourth position, and Romania closed the top five.

In the Juniors Relay, it was a powerful display from team Norway, even though they knew well in advance that only one team from each country can be in the final classification. They had two teams competing, one with both Junior World Champions crowned yesterday, Sivert Ekroll and Julie Meinicke, and the second one with both silver medallists, Casper Ronning and Theresa Furstenberg, and both of them smashed the rest of the field, working together from the first laps to open a significant gap and then work together throughout the whole race.

It was only at the last lap of the final ski when Ekroll, only 16 years of age and already two times Junior world champion of winter triathlon, managed to pass his teammate to claim gold for Team Norway 1. “It was an all or nothing race for both teams”, explained the Norwegian coach after the race. “They knew that whoever will finish first will be on the podium, but the second team will not be considered in the results, so they fought extremely hard at the end, but managed to work together from the beginning. They are all really good skiers and runners, and Sivert is also competing in MTB races, so we are building a really strong team for the future of winter triathlon events”, he said.

Third on the finish line, but claiming the silver medal, was Team Russia with Anastasiia Nepomilueva and Yaroslav Kurilenok, and the last spot in the podium was for the young Spanish team of Irene Moro Betrian and Alvaro Lopez Lucia, who grabbed the first ever medal for Spain in the Mixed Relay winter championships.
