Paralympics Ireland today celebrated the 6 Months To Go milestone to the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. On August 25th the Opening Ceremony for the Tokyo Paralympic Games will take place at the Olympic Stadium with the first athletes competing on Wednesday, August 26th.
Team Ireland will be part of that Opening Ceremony and the Irish team have today confirmed that they will depart for Tokyo on August 10th from Dublin Airport to the holding camp which will be in Narita City, 71 kilometres from the Olympic Stadium. The team will stay in Narita until the 18th of August at which point they will move to the Athletes Village in Tokyo. The Cycling team will have their holding camp in Masuda where they will be based before moving to their athlete village for cycling, situated between Izu for the track events and the Fuji Speedway for the road event.
Paralympic hopefuls, Patrick Monahan and Ronan Grimes joined representatives from Paralympics Ireland Partners; Allianz, Circle K, Citi, FloGas, Toyota, Goosebump and Crowley Millar at the Sport Ireland Campus for a special ‘Paralympics Ireland Partners Event,’ to mark the 6 months to go milestone.
Speaking about the 6 Months to Go Milestone event Chef De Mission, Denis Toomey said ‘We are very much looking forward to the beginning of the Paralympic Games in just 6 months time. The plans are now in place for the team and each day athletes are coming closer to confirming their place on the plane that will depart on August 10th. It is an exciting time for athletes and organisers alike and we can’t wait to help our Irish athletes reach their potential in Tokyo later this year.’
Miriam Malone, CEO of Paralympics Ireland said ‘With just 6 months to go to the games we are entering into a key time for athletes and their coaches. The games are coming fully into focus now and there is so much anticipation about what lies ahead. I am confident that our team will be amongst the best prepared for the competition and will have everything that they will need to produce their best performances at the Games.‘
Speaking about the Partners Day event Miriam Malone said ‘I would like to pay tribute to our partners who joined us today for this unique event where they shared their plans for the coming year in an open and enjoyable forum. Without our partners we would not be able to put in place all of the plans to support our athletes to achieve success at the top level of para sport and for that I would like to express my sincere gratitude.’
Irish Paralympian Patrick Monahan said ‘I have had a taste of the games before in Rio de Janeiro and I am determined that I will get back onto that stage again. The Paralympic Games are the ultimate aim for me and my fellow para athletes, it is up to me now to try to secure my place on the team and ensure that I am one of the athletes following the Irish flag at the opening ceremony in 6 Months time.’
Irish Paralympic hopeful Ronan Grimes said ‘Ever since I first sat in the saddle of my bike I have dreamt about qualifying for the Paralympic Games and representing my country. I am in a good place personally after winning bronze at the Para Track World Championships in Canada last month and I feel like there is more to come from me. The next few months are crucial for me and for all my fellow athletes so I will be concentrating on producing the best rides that I can over the next few months and guaranteeing my place on the plane then the games will take care of themselves.’
