CANOE EUROPE - Paulina Pirro claimed her third Junior Kayak European Champion title

The first individual Junior and U23 European Champions were crowned on day 3 of the 2023 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom European Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia. Paulina Pirro (GER) defended her European Champion title in women's junior K1 event, Lucie Nesnidalova (CZE) won in women's K1 U23 final, Miquel Trave (ESP) was the best in men's U23 K1 final and Martin Cornu (FRA) won gold medal in junior MK1 event.

German kayaker Paulina Pirro continued her excellent performances at the Junior Canoe Slalom European Championships. In Saturday's final of the 2023 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom European Championships in Bratislava she won her third Junior European kayak champion title in four attempts. In 2020, she celebrated her first European Champion title at the Junior European Championships in Krakow, last year she was unbeatable in Česke Budejovice, and this year in Bratislava. In 2021, when European Championships was organised in Solkan, she was just outside the podium in fourth position.

In today's final Pirro stopped the clock at 102.14, which was more than three seconds faster than Olga Samkova from Czechia. Pirro and Samkova were first and second also last year. Bronze medal in junior women's kayak event went to Charlotte Wild from Germany.

In men's kayak U23 final Miquel Trave (ESP) showed he is in excellent form. He won his second gold at this European Championships, following the success in kayak team event on Thursday. 23-year-old paddler from Cadi Kayak Club records great success at this course in Bratislava. In 2018, he wrote history by becoming Junior European Champion both in kayak and canoe event in Čunovo, just outside Bratislava. Spanish kayaker won despite the two penalty seconds and was a second faster than Jakub Krejči (CZE) who had a penalty free run and received silver medal for his perfromance. Leo Vuitton (FRA) continues great family tradition (his mother is Brigitte Guibal, 2000 Olympic Games silver medallist) and won bronze medal.

In women's U23 kayak final Czechia celebrated a double win thanks to Lucie Nesnidalova and Antonie Galuškova. The latter was the defending champion, but this time she had to congratulate her teammate Nesnidalova, who was 0.62 seconds faster on the course. This is the second individual medal for Lucie Nesnidalova, first gold, but she has seven team medals at Junior and U23 European and World Championships. In 2021, she won silver medal in team event at senior Canoe Slalom World Championships in this course in Bratislava. Bronze medal went to Slovenia this time, thanks to Lea Novak.

Martin Cornu (FRA) was the winner of men's kayak junior final. Young French athlete was 0.43 seconds faster than Xabier Ferrazzi (ITA). Cornu, however managed to put down a clean run, while Italian kayaker (son of Pierpaolo Ferrazzi, 1992 Olympic Champion, and Maria Eizmendi Perez, Spanish Olympian) picked up two penalty seconds in the penultimate gate, which cost him the Junior European Champion title. Žiga Lin Hočevar from Slovenia, who won silver medal in this event last year, was third.

On Sunday, the 2023 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom European Championships in Bratislava will conclude with eight medal events. First, athletes will fight for the individual medals in canoe and later in the day the kayak cross quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will follow.
