Olympiacos to retain another title at Women's Super Cup Final, Piraeus

For the second time after 2010, an all-Greek final will decide the women’s Super Cup. The Piraeus arch-rivals, Euro League winner Olympiacos and LEN Trophy winner Ethnikos will clash Saturday evening.

Olympiacos are running for their third Super Cup, they won in 2015 and in last year, while Ethnikos is yet to lift this trophy. The ‘Big Sister’ is definitely the favourite to retain the title – it’s stronger, it has reached the best eight in the Champions League last weekend, while Ethnikos bowed out with three defeats, a true mirror of the current forms.

Still, it’s a single game and unlike in the men’s history, where the Champions League winners’ dominance is overwhelming (19-1 in the last 20 finals), the women’s finals saw a couple of upsets. Though its history is much shorter, contested since 2006, here the respective winners of the second-tier cup trail by only 10-5 in overall so far.

This is going to be the second all-Greek final – and Ethnikos don’t have fond memories from the first one as Vouliagmeni thrashed them 13-5 in 2010. Now they face Olympiacos, which won two and lost one (that, as LEN Trophy winner, just narrowly to Sabadell in 2014, 8-9) and from their perspective all is set for a title-defence. It would happen for the third time after Vouliagmeni’s back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010, and Sabadell’s double from 2013 and 2014.
