Paralympics Ireland set to host Tokyo 2020 Awards for Team Ireland

The team that represented Ireland at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will gather in Dublin Castle on Friday, 4th February for the Paralympics Ireland Tokyo 2020 Awards Ceremony. Athletes, coaches, and support staff of Team Ireland will be joined by An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, Minister Catherine Martin, Minister Jack Chambers and Japanese Ambassador to Ireland Mitsuru Kitano to celebrate the fantastic achievements of Team Ireland in Tokyo.

The Paralympics Ireland Tokyo 2020 Awards will represent the first time that the full team that competed at Tokyo 2020 will have been able to come together. The event will celebrate the achievements of the entire Irish Paralympic Team, who returned home from Tokyo with seven Paralympic medals, a host of Personal Best performances and some amazing memories for those that were in attendance and those who watched on from home.

Speaking ahead of the event, Paralympics Ireland President, Eimear Breathnach said: “It is fantastic to finally get the chance to celebrate and reflect on the amazing achievements of the team, after a five-year cycle. The Team Ireland athletes and support staff did the nation proud as they navigated through the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. We look forward to celebrating their fully deserved successes at the Tokyo 2020 Awards on 4th February in Dublin Castle.”

The Tokyo 2020 Awards will recognise the achievements of the Team Ireland athletes and staff in a number of categories including Outstanding Male Performance, Outstanding Female Performance, Outstanding Debut Performance, Young Paralympian of the Games, and Outstanding Contribution to the Irish Paralympic Team (Athlete and Non-Athlete).

The Awards will also recognise the achievements in other areas including Outstanding Media Contribution to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and Best Photograph of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Also presented on the night will be the President’s Award, Irish Paralympic Order, and an inductee to the Paralympics Ireland Hall of Fame.

The event will be presented by RTÉ’s Daráine Mulvihill and will be live streamed on the Paralympics Ireland website from 3pm on Friday, 4th February.
