Fashion police: The artistic swimming costume

In much of the world, the end of the year and the beginning of the new one are times of festivity, with many different celebrations taking place. But what do all these celebrations have in common? They're a chance to wear nice clothes, make yourself look good and enjoy yourself along with friends and family.

It isn’t always easy to find the perfect outfit, but worry not! Athletes from the past and present are ready to inspire you with the outfits, haircuts and accessories they wore at the Olympics.

In the twelfth part of this series, the colourful and rhinestone-encrusted costumes worn by the artistic swimming athletes.

Ever since artistic swimming (previously synchronised swimming) was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1984, there have been great performances from the best teams in the world but also bright, colourful and eye-catching costumes, some of which incorporate rhinestones, Swarovski crystal and other shiny sequins on top of equally artistic head accessories.

Often designed and customised to reflect the team's chosen choreography, these costumes need to be made of high-quality materials while allowing the swimmers to be agile when performing their routines and moves in the water.

From Brazil's carnival-inspired costumes to Greece's modern tuxedo tops, these artistic swimming costumes are a modern fixture of the Games.
