Sarah Sjöström startet beim Euro Meet ins Olympiajahr in LUXEMBOURG

Sie gilt als Wunderkind des schwedischen Schwimmsports und gewann bei der Weltmeisterschaft 2009 in Rom über 100m Schmetterling als erste skandinavische Schwimmerin die Goldmedaille. Es folgten sieben weitere Weltmeistertitel über 50m bzw. 100m Schmetterling. Bei den Olympischen Spielen 2016 in Rio de Janeiro wurde Sarah Fredrika Sjöström in Weltrekordzeit von 55,48 Sekunden Olympiasiegerin über 100m Schmetterling, gewann Silber über 200m Freistil und Bronze über 100m Freistil.
Standesgemäß hält die Weltschwimmerin des Jahres 2017 auch die Weltrekorde über 50m Schmetterling (24,43), 50m Freistil (23,67) und 100m Freistil (51,71).
Bei den Weltmeisterschaften 2019 in Gwangju, sammelte Sarah Sjöström fünf Einzelmedaillen – so viele wie keine andere Athletin: Gold über 50 m Schmetterling (das dritte WM-Gold in Folge auf dieser Strecke), zwei Mal Silber (100 m Schmetterling und 50 m Freistil); und zwei Bronzemedaillen über 100m und 200m Freistil.
Beim Euro Meet 2017 brach Sarah die Meet-Rekorde über 50 und 100m Freistil und Schmetterling. 2018 verbesserte sie die Marke über 100m Schmetterling erneut.
Bei der 22. Auflage des Euro Meets vom 24. bis 26. Januar 2020 wird Schwedens Schwimm-Königin erneut ihr Können unter Beweis stellen und das Meeting auf Kirchberg als Auftakt in die Olympiasaison nutzen.

A tough weekend ahead at the Women’s Euro League Water Polo

The top sixteen women teams are getting ready for the battles of the Euro League preliminary round but by Sunday afternoon only eight will stay standing – and all four groups look quite balanced.
The field is to be halved and there might be some major casualties as the quartets look quite balanced and only the top two ranked sides will make the quarter-finals.
Last season’s runner-up Olympiacos faces three big matches in Piraeus as Group A features the 2018 LEN Trophy and Super Cup winner Dunaujvaros from Hungary and two Spanish sides, Mataro and Mediterrani, both strong and dangerous enough to cause upsets.
Title-holder Sabadell lost the Super Cup final to Orizzonte and it was visible that the Spanish team fielded a weakened line-up compared to the previous season. So even if they play at home, it’s going to be a challenging ride against LEN Trophy runner-up UVSE of Hungary, Italy’s emerging club Rome and the top Dutch team Utrecht.
Kinef Kirishi won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018, last season they missed the top flight for the first time in five years. Though they are usually stronger at home, the Russians still need to offer their best as Italy’s Padova and Greece’s Vouliagmeni showed last spring that they were at the top level (played for the bronze medal in the Final Four) and the Dutch are always a threat in women’s water polo even though Tetteroo is the underdog in this quartet.
Newly crowned Super Cup winner Orizzonte needs to prove its qualities once again as the Italians – topping the all-time ranks with 8 Euro League/Champions Cup triumphs – are to have three showdowns against rising Spanish club Sant Andreu, Russia’s ever powerful Uralochka and the No. 3 Hungarian side BVSC.

Sarah Sjöström starts the Olympic year at Euro Meet

Known as Swedish swimming wonder, Sarah was the first Scandinavian swimmer to win the gold medal at the 2009 World Championships in Rome on 100m Butterfly. Seven more titles at World Swimming Champs in 50m and 100m Butterfly followed. At the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro Sarah Fredrika Sjöström became Olympic Champion on 100m butterfly in world record time of 55,48 seconds, won silver on 200m freestyle and bronze on 100m freestyle.
The world swimmer of the year 2017 also holds the world records for 50m butterfly (24,43), 50m freestyle (23,67) and 100m freestyle (51,71).
At the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Sarah Sjöström collected five medals in single events - more than any other athlete: gold in the 50m butterfly (the third gold in a row on this event), two silver medals (100m butterfly and 50m freestyle); and two bronze medals in the 100m and 200m freestyle.
At Euro Meet 2017 Sarah broke the 50m and 100m freestyle and butterfly meet records. In 2018 she again improved the 100m Butterfly mark.
At the 22nd edition of the Euro Meet from 24th to 26th January 2020, Sweden's Swimming Queen will once again prove her skills and use the meeting at Kirchberg as a kick off into the Olympic season.

Orizzonte claims second title at the Women’s Super Cup Final Water Polo with magnificent first half

Ekipe Orizzonte clinched its second Super Cup trophy by beating Euro League champion Sabadell in a thrilling final in Spain. The Italians flied high in the first half and took a 2-9 lead but the hosts climbed back to turn the last two minutes into a heated battle, still, they didn’t have a realistic chance to equalise. Orizzonte won this title for the second time after 2008.

With only six players remaining on board from the Euro League winning side, Sabadell faced a challenging match against LEN Trophy-holder Orizzonte, which went through a lighter transformation in the summer.
With its US aces gone, Sabadell’s offence significantly weakened and that was visible right from the beginning. Two missed man-ups marked that in the first minutes, while Orizzonte found the back of the net twice in 34 seconds in the middle of the opening period. Maica Garcia stepped up to save the hosts and managed to net a fine goal from the centre after 5:18 minutes but Ann McKelvey put away a 6 on 5 so the Italians led 1-3 after eight minutes.
When Julia Forca scored a bit luckily early in the second for 2-3 it promised that Sabadell might find the right rhythm. What came instead were minutes of horrors for the Spaniards as Orizzonte scored six goals in a row. Arianna Garibotti stunned Laura Esther twice in 51 seconds from the distance and later came three more action goals plus a man-up at the end to give the LEN Trophy winners a commanding if not decisive 2-9 lead by halftime.
A sharp contrast between the goalies told the story of this period, while Ester was unable to cope with the outside shots, Giulia Gorlero delivered one big save after the other – the number of stops stood 2-10 at halftime, somewhat mirroring the scoreboard. The man-ups were similar at this stage: 0 for 5 at Sabadell, 3 for 3 at Orizzonte.
To give at least some hope for the capacity crowd, the home side started the second half differently. Marina Cordobes put away a 6 on 5, Kaur Sofi added one more from action, then they killed the first man-down and Forca pulled one more back for 5-9. The surge was somewhat halted by a fine goal from the centre by Rosaria Aiello but the Spaniards kept going, found the right shots to beat Gorlero and came back to 8-11 before the last quarter.
Last Easter they also trailed 8-11 against Olympiacos in this pool in the Euro League final and then they staged the comeback of the season with a 5-0 rush. Delivering the same plan would have required burying the first two man-ups at the beginning of the fourth, but missing both and then conceding two action goals in a span of 24 seconds turned the project into a mission impossible.
They tried it, though, with 2:13 to go the gap was reduced to two at 11-13, and Sabadell had a possession. Forca’s lob landed on the bar however, then a 7 on 6 set-up saw a blocked shot and the Italians played out the time to earn a well-deserved win. This also means that the LEN Trophy winners now clinched back-to-back wins in the final, but the Euro League champions still hold a 9-5 lead in the all-time head-to-head.
