Als erste Schweizerin seit der Silbermedaille von Patrizia Humplik über 200 Brust im Jahre 2008 gewinnt Maria Ugolkova EM Silber an den Kurzbahn-Europameisterschaften. Flori Langs EM-Silber über 50 Rücken im Jahre 2011 war die letzte Medaille eines Schweizer Athleten an den Kurzbahn-EM.
Gegen beinahe identische Konkurrenz im selben Schwimmbad hatte Ugolkova EM Bronze auf der langen Bahn geholt. Ihre Zeit von 2:06.59 bedeutete einen massiven Schweizerrekord. Sie verbesserte sich um 1.81 Sekunden gegenüber ihrem alten Rekord von der Kurzbahn EM 2017 in Kopenhagen, wo sie noch Vierte wurde.
Am Start waren Superstar Katinka Hosszu (HUN), Weltrekordhalterin und Olympiasiegerin, sowie Siobhan O’Connor (GBR), ihres Zeichens Olympiazweite. Weitere Schwimmerinnen wiesen bessere persönliche Bestzeiten auf als Ugolkova. Sie meisterte diese schwere Herausforderung und lieferte eine herausragende Leistung ab. Ugolkova meinte dazu: «Es war ein sehr knappes Rennen und ich bin sehr happy, da ich überhaupt keine Medaille erwartet hatte. Und ich möchte noch sagen, dass ich diesen Pool liebe.»
Nebst diesem Erfolg ging der sechste Rang von Lisa Mamié im Final über 100 Brust beinahe etwas unter. Die 22-jährige Zürcherin unterbot ihren fünften Schweizerrekord im sechsten Rennen an diesen Meisterschaften. Sie erreichte erstmals den Final über die 100 Meter Distanz. Sie unterbot ihren Rekord vom Vorlauf um weitere drei Hundertstelsekunden auf 1:05.34. Zur Medaille fehlten ihr lediglich 22 Hundertstelsekunden. Morgen schwimmt Mamié über 200 Meter Brust, ihrer stärksten Disziplin.
