Paracanoeist Jack Eyers sets Europe's best time in VL3 heats in Munich 2022

The day has come and the first canoe sprint and paracanoe races were on the programme of the Munich 2022 European Championships. Heats in eleven canoe sprint and two paracanoe events were held on the opening day. Jack Eyers from Great Britain was athlete of the day - producing the best time of Paracanoe European Championships in VL3 heats.

Heats in two paracanoe events were held on the opening day of the Munich 2022 European Championships. Jack Eyers from Great Britain was the winner of the men's VL3 200 metres event with the best European time. The new mark is now 48.836.

"Good start to the event. Not so good start to my race, just clipped the (starting) bucket on the way down, so a few things to change there. Apart from that, I'm very happy with how it all panned out after that. This year's been really exciting for me. Done some really heavy training over the last winter season and last summer as well, so it's nice to see it all coming together. That race execution is something I've been really working on; I've always had the physical potential but it's hooking it up on race day. Such a skill to have and it only comes with experience. This is my fifth year in it now, so I'm getting that experience," said the new fastest European man in VL3 200m event.

He is very excited to be a part of the Munich 2022: "Massively exciting. I always thought Paralympics meant parallel to the Olympics, and I have been proved otherwise. I would love to see it more often, where they do run parallel to each other. Sometimes it can come across as a little bit of a hierarchy, with something happening first before the paras. This sport is coming along leaps and bounds, and the times that we're creating is almost competitive to the Olympic team - if you put us in different boats. And it needs just as much attention."

Ukraine's Vladislav Yepifanov was the winner of the second VL3 200m heat, while in men's KL2 200 metres heats Christian Volpi (ITA) and Mykola Syniuk from Ukraine won in their respective groups.

The paracanoe competitions at the Munich 2022 European Championships continue on Friday.
