Canoe Slalom European Championships - Debutants surprise in Krakow

Vojtech Heger, Elena Apel, Mewen Debliquy and Paulina Pirro were crowned European Champions in men's canoe and women's kayak events of the 2020 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom European Championships in Poland.

What a day for women's German canoe slalom team it was. First Elena Apel won in women's kayak U23 final to celebrate the European Champion title and in the last final of the day Paulina Pirro won another gold medal for Germany.

Elena Apel was considered one of the favourites for the medal before the championships and she did not dissapoint. She finished first in heats, was third in the semifinal and at the end produced the best run in the final. It took her 99.01 seconds to reach the finish line, which was 2.17 faster than silver medal winner Klaudia Zwolinska from Poland. Antonie Galuškova from Czech Republic was third.

While Elena Apel already has experiences from the top level canoeing competitions, she participated at senior World Championships, World Cups and European Championships, her younger teammate Paulina Pirro participated at her first ever Junior Championships. And what a way to start the international career. It was a very tight final in women's junior kayak event, but at the end Pirro celebrated a win ahead of French paddler Emma Vuitton, who was 0.91 seconds behind. Katerina Bekova from Czech Republic was third.

Vojtech Heger (CZE) won European Champion title in men's C1 U23 event, ahead of Polish paddler Kacper Sztuba and Russian representative Dmitrii Khramtsov. This is another great results for Heger, who was fifth at Senior Europeans two weeks ago in Prague.

Like Pirro in junior women's kayak final, the debutant won gold medal also in men's junior C1 final. In his first year in French national team Mewen Debliquy won his first European Champion title. His run was superb and he was more than four seconds faster than his opponents. Adam Kral from Czech Republic was second and Yohann Senechault from France third.
