New dates for European Aquatics Championships: 10-23 May 2021

The LEN Bureau has agreed to set new dates for the upcoming European Aquatics Championships. The event will be staged on 10-23 May 2021 in Budapest.
The European Aquatics Championships in swimming, diving, artistic swimming and open water swimming would have kicked off next Monday, 11 May, in Budapest but due to the Covid-19 pandemic the event has been rescheduled to 10-23 May 2021.
“LEN is grateful for the Hungarian Government and the Hungarian Swimming Association as they all were very supportive to establish the new dates for the championships in Budapest” LEN President Paolo Barelli said. “I’m sure that the event, to be held in the same time-frame as it was planned for this season, will serve our athletes’ best interests in the new Olympic year. We also hope that by May 2021 our life will get back to normal and we can enjoy the usual magical atmosphere in the Duna Arena, great races in front of a sellout crowd.”
“We are happy to reach an agreement on the new dates of the European Championships” Minister of State for Sports in Hungary Tunde Szabo said. “Hungarians are in love with aquatics and especially after such an extraordinary period the people will be eager to watch the best athletes in action. I’m sure that next May will add another golden chapter to the rich history of European Aquatics.”
LEN’s top partner the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has also been involved to the process before the new dates have been announced. The competitions in swimming, diving and artistic swimming will be held in the iconic Duna Arena complex, while the open water races will take place in Lupa Lake, near to Budapest.
The LEN Bureau discussed the options to finish the water polo club season but due to the travel restrictions and the limited training opportunities it decided to cancel all European competitions, including the Champions League, the Euro Cup and the women’s Euro League. The Bureau will explore the best options for the next season in order to witness top level water polo again.
