Santorini Experience 2022 Culture and Sports Tourism

Drisbioti, Rouwendaal, Carlin, Iakovakis and more global stars in Santorini

Athens, September 28, 2022 – The great event of Santorini Experience that celebrates the cultural, sports and sea tourism in one of the world’s top destinations, returned after two years of pandemic. The new impressive running routes and the established one-of-a-kind open water swimming route, having the unique Aegean images of Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, Akrotiri and the Volcano as a magnificent background scenery, gathered, amateur and professional swimmers and runners in Santorini from 22 countries such as U.S.A., Brazil, Uruguay, South Africa, Nigeria, Jamaica, India, Great Britain, Germany and France on September 23-25.

Culture in the spotlight with the Daedalic Kore of Thira

During Santorini Experience, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ms. Sofia Zacharaki, the Mayor of Thira, Mr. Antonios Sigalas and the Deputy Mayor of Thira and Head of Culture, Ms. Sofia Kitsou visited the Daedalic Kore of Thira. The rare masterpiece of Greek sculpture from the 7th century BC, which came to light in 2000 by the Thiraean archaeologist Charalambos Sigalas, during a rescue excavation in the cemetery of the ancient city of Thira, in southeastern Sellada, is now the central exhibit of the under renovation Archaeological Museum of Thira. The world now, has the opportunity to admire the archaic Kore made of white Naxian marble of supernatural size, with height 2.30m and weight 750 kg, 22 years after its discovery.

In the context of her visit in Santorini, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ms. Sofia Zacharaki said: “I had the pleasure of being in Santorini on September 23-25, at an iconic sports tourism event, the Santorini Experience, which has been revived after a two-year absence and is now establishing itself as a major sporting event, uniting culture and sports, with many participant athletes from all over the world. The participants even had the opportunity to take a guided tour of the under-renovation museum of Santorini and admire the Kore of Thira, a unique point of cultural reference not only for the island but also for Greece and the world. With the special forms of tourism, such as sports and cultural tourism, a fact emerges that all destinations of our country, even the most popular ones like Santorini, have the possibility to further diversify their tourist product, offering even more qualitative options to the visitor. It is a central priority of the Ministry of Tourism to support events such as Santorini Experience, to which we gave our auspices with great pleasure, reflecting our will for practical support for similar initiatives throughout the country. Greece and Greeks, with this year's success of tourism, have shown that we are able not only to overcome global crises, but also exceed all expectations. The bet for the future is for tourism development to be sustainable, balanced and qualitative. And in this, the role of institutions like Santorini Experience is pivotal”.

At the same time, the Mayor of Thira, Mr. Antonios Sigalas said, among other things: “We had a very successful event that made a new start and created a dynamic presence in culture as well. I am very satisfied that the Half Marathon was named after the Daedalic Kore of Thira and today we are at the Archaeological Museum of Santorini where we had the honor and pleasure of accompanying the Deputy Minister of Tourism Ms. Zacharaki to enjoy this amazing work. The Municipality of Thira, which places a great deal of emphasis on tourism, but even more on culture and sports, proved the success of its investment program with the Ministry of Culture once again, which supports all these actions and the completion of this space so that Kore can continue to be visited for years to come. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this great success”.

World Class Names in Santorini Experience 2022

Significant athletes conveyed the message of culture, emitted by the Daedalic Kore of Thira, through their presence at this year’s Santorini Experience.

The athletes who were present in Santorini and were honored by the event were:

The two-time European gold medalist and Olympian in race walking Antigoni Drisbioti, who honored Greece and made everyone proud with her successes at the European Athletics Championships in Munich

The Dutch gold and silver Olympic medalist, world champion and 8-time European champion in open water swimming Sharon van Rouwendaal

The British two-time silver Olympic medalist in open water swimming Jazz Carlin

One of the top names in Greek athletics, the Olympian and European champion in the 400m. with hurdles Periklis Iakovakis

and the Greek-American ultramarathon Konstantine Dean Karnazes who promoted and spread the message of Santorini’s sports and cultural tradition with his participation, in the United States of America and around the world.

New impressive running routes

The 2022 program included a new route for the 5km as well as a Half Marathon for the first time.

In addition, the participants in the 5km “Aristides Alafouzos” saw for the first time on Friday, September 23, Santorini from a different ankle, specifically from Akrotiri, one of the most important prehistoric settlements in Europe and admired a new, but equally magical view than the one we are all used to seeing.

Starting from the church of Saint Raphael, runners headed towards the Akrotiri Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in Greece built in 1892 and reached the westernmost point of the island, returning to Saint Raphael for their finish. At the starting line of the race the two-time European gold medalist and Olympian in race walking Antigoni Drisbioti, the Olympian and European champion in the 400m. with hurdles Periklis Iakovakis, the former international goalkeeper and European champion with the Greek national football team Antonis Nikopolidis and EuroLeague Legend Joe Arlauckas were present.

On Saturday September 24, the “Daedalic Kore of Thira” Half Marathon was held starting from the Holy Church of Saint George in Oia, passing through the enchanting areas of Imerovigli and Fira and finish back to Oia. This route received the name “Daedalic Kore of Thira”, after the unique archaeological finding dating back to 640 BC.

Both running races were co-organized with AS Ifestos Thira and EAS SEGAS Cyclades.

The best swimming route in the world

On Sunday September 25, participants swam in the unique 1.5 miles (2.4 km) “L & E Nomikos” open water swimming route of Santorini Experience that was held from the volcano to the old port of Fira, having the imposing view of the island in front of them, with the approval of the Hellenic Swimming Federation.

World class names took part in the swim, including the Dutch gold and silver Olympic medalist, world champion and 8-time European champion in open water swimming Sharon van Rouwendaal that finished first, the British two-time silver Olympic medalist in open water swimming Jazz Carlin, as well as athletes of the Greek national swimming team such as Dimitris Negris, Stellina Aplanti, Panagiotis Chiotis, Marina Triantafyllidi and Marina Pakou.

The route was named in honor of the benefactor Evangelos Nomikos and his wife, in whose memory the “Loula & Evangelos Nomikos” Foundation was created, which built the visionary Cable Car 40 years ago. The route has been designed by the race’s technical director with Olympic and world championship distinctions in swimming, Nikos Gemelos. The event was honored with the presence of the Greek world champion in open water swimming and athletes’ representative in the Hellenic Swimming Federation’s Board of Directors, Kelly Araouzou.

Swimming race with utmost safety

Santorini Boatmen’s Association contributed to the absolute safety of the race, which transported the athletes to the volcano and contributed to the smooth implementation of the open water swimming. Moreover, the race was assisted by the 100 specialized escorts in the water, mainly with the support of Lifeguard Patrol which, in addition to its staff, had several lifeboats, the Voluntary Lifeguards of Santorini, the Atlantis Dive Center, the Santorini Nautical Club, and Caldera Yachting, all together having more than 30 boats alongside the athletes! Santorini Experience looked after the swimmers by providing the safety buoy which all swimmers were required to wear for safety. In fact, athletes like Rouwendaal and Carlin set an example by swimming with a safety buoy too.

With the end of the swimming race, the technical director, Mr. Nikos Gemelos, said: “Every year at Santorini Experience is unique. This year, however, is the year that the event was re-introduced so that it will keep taking place again every year. This repetition helps us not to miss this beautiful event and ensures that the experience can be lived by everyone. Events like Santorini Experience bring people closer to swimming”.

All participants received a technical t-shirt with the new, exquisite design of the event from Luanvi, while swimmers also received a swimming cap. Santo Maris Oia and Blue Star Ferries each offered a sustainable backpack, while at the end of each route Erotokritos Cretan Bakery took care of the guests with traditional flavors and of course Vikos, provided the necessary hydration before, during and after the races.

Numerous side actions

During Santorini Experience, in addition to the races and the visit to the Archaeological Museum of Thira, the following side actions were held: an impressive Sunset Pilates Session with physical education instructor Mandy Persaki at Santo Maris Oia, Cocktails at Esperisma bar restaurant and Volcano View, a unique Boat Tour at the enchanting Santorini from Travel to Greece by Med Shore Tours & Travel, as well as rich meals at Seaside Santorini, Trinacria, The Dolphins and Skala restaurants.

The event could not have happened without the implicit support of top Greek companies as well as hotel units that are among the best hotels in the world.

The event’s Official Sponsors included Metaxa Hospitality Group - Santo Maris that created the completely relaxing and rejuvenating Relax Day Spa package for the optimal performance of the athletes and Blue Star Ferries which traveled all participants with safety offering them significant discounts.

USA Water Polo Commits $12 Million To City Of Irvine's Newly Approved Aquatic Center

New State-of-the-Art Aquatic Center Will Become Home to USA Water Polo National Teams, National Junior Olympics

Irvine, CA, September 29, 2022 -- USA Water Polo today announced its commitment to contribute $12 million to the newly approved water polo aquatic center in Irvine, CA. The Irvine City Council voted 4-1 in favor of the state-of-the-art aquatic center during its Great Park Board and City Council meeting held on Tuesday, Sept. 27, which will become home to USA Water Polo's national teams and national programming, including the National Junior Olympics, the largest water polo tournament in the world.

USA Water Polo's $12 million contribution will cover the cost of its exclusive use areas such as national team locker and weight rooms, as well as subsidizing world-class elements that will allow the facility to host training in preparation for the Olympic Games alongside national championships, professional development camps, and international competitions. The City of Irvine will own, maintain, and manage the center, with a majority of usage dedicated for civic programming, including swim lessons, Irvine Swim League, and aqua aerobics.

"We are delighted that the City of Irvine has approved the new aquatic center in collaboration with USA Water Polo, which we are confident will be a great asset to the City of Irvine and its residents," said Christopher Ramsey, CEO, USA Water Polo. "We are grateful for the City Council's consideration of this initiative and are ready to help get the center up and running in time for the LA28 Olympic Games."

USA Water Polo's residency represents $850 million to $1 billion in economic activity through 2055, adding an average of more than $30 million dollars a year to the Irvine economy. As an Irvine-based non-profit organization, USA Water Polo offers programs and expanded opportunities to all who are interested in playing water polo.

USA Water Polo Olympic teams will now have a permanent home in the City of Irvine. The women's national water polo team is one of the most medaled in the history of sport, winning gold medals at the last three Olympic Games and four consecutive world championships. The men's national water polo team is the only national team outside of Europe to win Olympic medals in the sport, and is coming off two consecutive silver medals at the FINA World League Super Finals.

"The USA Water Polo national teams are outstanding scholar athletes who represent our nation in elite competitions around the world. Now other national teams will come to Irvine to compete against them -- occupying local hotels, restaurants and contributing in other vital ways to the City's financial health and quality of life. Our athletes will also provide valuable leadership and technical training for Irvine's youth, helping all of us appreciate the commitment required to perform at a sustained world class level," added Ramsey.

Men’s European U19 Water Polo Championships, Podgorica (MNE) The Serbs nailed it, claim third title in four editions

After back-to-back penalty shootout wins – in the quarter’s (vs Italy) and semi’s (vs Hungary) – Serbia clinched the LEN European Men’s U19 Water Polo title in regular time against Spain.

The final was no less thrilling than their previous encounters with the decisive goal coming two minutes from time.

Spain had to settle for the silver for the sixth time since the inaugural 1970 championship.

The bronze went to Hungary who beat Greece convincingly.

MVP: Vasilije Martinovic (SRB); Best GK: Alejandro Alegre Lopez (ESP); Best Scorer: Nikolaos Gkillas (GRE).

Gold medal final: Serbia 9-8 Spain.

Bronze medal final: Hungary 10-7 Greece.

Places 5-6th: Italy 11-14 Croatia.

Places 7-8th: Germany 12-13 Montenegro.

After missing the podium in 2018 – and seeing the event cancelled in 2020, Serbia finally reclaimed the throne they previously occupied in 2014 and 2016.

In the final, Spain took the lead and the Serbs needed almost six minutes to score their first but then quickly added another to go 2-1 ahead with eight minutes played. Soon they doubled the gap and still retained their 4-2 deep into the third, but the Spaniards levelled the score in 47 seconds while the Serbs’ captain Vasilije Martinovic got his second exclusion.

His team-mates did not panic though and Nikola Kojic scored in the very last second of the first half for 5-4.

Again, the Serbs managed to reset the two-goal difference twice, however, Spain would come back to even again, two man-up goals in two minutes were enough to make it 7-7, while the Serbs missed two extras in this period.

Not in the fourth, though, Aleksandar Kovacevic put away a 6 on 5 after a minute. Despite missing their next man-up, Spain could equalise, Gerard Gil sent the ball home from action for 8-8.

With 3:24 on the clock, the Serbian head coach Uros Stevanovic, who’s passion and impulsiveness can be key to his team’s success, received a red card – not for the first time in his career.

That appeared to give his players even greater motivation and Martinovic sent a brilliant bouncer from the wing under the bar in an extra, with 2:03 on the clock for 9-8.

It was Spain’s turn, but even after a time-out they were unable to overplay the super-intensive defence of the Serbs and the goalie could make an easy catch to deny them in the fourth straight man-down.

The Spaniards had one more possession and managed to launch a counter-like attack but the finish was poor from the left side. The Serbs retained the ball in the last half a minute and could start their celebrations together – with many supporters coming over to the neighbourhood.

In the bronze medal match, Hungary earned some consolation with a hard-fought win over Greece.

The Magyars took a 2-1 lead after eight minutes, the Greeks hit back with three connecting goals early in the second to go 2-4 up.

Then came a crucial phase as the Hungarians regrouped themselves and after coming back to even by half-time, they added three more in the third to stage a 6-1 run.

After falling back to 8-5, the Greeks had desperate attempts but were unable to cut the gap to one goal at any stage. With 59 seconds to go, Erik Molnar – silver medallist with the senior team two weeks ago in Split – put away an extra to close down the contest.

Croatia built a massive lead in the second period of the game played for the fifth place, and once they were 4-8 up, they never let the Italians back to the match.

Host Montenegro closed their campaign with a win over Germany. It was a thriller as the home side blew a five-goal lead, but David Stevovic netted the winner 1:30 from time.

Final rankings:

1. Serbia, 2. Spain, 3. Hungary, 4. Greece, 5. Croatia, 6. Italy, 7. Montenegro, 8. Germany, 9. Netherlands, 10. Malta, 11. France, 12. Georgia, 13. Turkiye, 14. Romania, 15. Czech Republic, 16. Slovakia.

Open Water Certification Program in Partnership with WOWSA

We are so thrilled to be working with Catherine Kase. Catherine is 4-time World Championship Head Open Water Coach for USA Swimming and former Head Coach @ USC. She will lead 4 live discussions on Tuesday evenings as you work your way through WOWSA's open water certification course.

Catherine's star swimmer Haley Anderson, the only American to medal in open water at the Olympic Games, will also make a guest appearance on one of the sessions.

Coaches who pass the program will become open water certified by WOWSA and able to safely coach swimmers in short introductory open water swims as well as coach elite swimmers in national and international 5k, 10k & 25k competition.

The virtual sessions will also be recorded to view later if you can’t attend the live sessions.

We want to make sure you all get a chance to attend this very special event, so we are extending our Early Bird registration with a $25 off coupon.

September 4 – 30th – $125 (use coupon code WSCACOACH at checkout)

At WOWSA, we can’t wait to see America’s dominance in the pool spill over into open water, but we need coaches like you to lead. We look forward to working with you.

World Triathlon approves the first events on the 2023 season calendar

There may be plenty of racing left to come in this extended 2022 season, but we are already looking forward to a thrilling 2023 with new host cities and established favourites ready to roll out the blue carpet for the world’s best triathletes. The World Triathlon Executive Board has approved the first events of the 2023 calendar, when the World Triathlon Championship Series will finish with the Championship Finals in Pontevedra, Spain, while Hamburg, Germany will host in 2023 the Sprint & Relay World Championships, and the Spanish island of Ibiza the Multisport Championships. (Please note that more events will be announced in the coming weeks.)

On top of the events in Pontevedra and Hamburg, two cities have already been confirmed as stops on the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series: the best in the world will perform once more over the Olympic distance in Yokohama in May, while in July the athletes will travel to Sunderland, UK, as the city makes its debut on the circuit replacing Leeds as a host city.

On the World Triathlon Cup calendar, the season will start with a classic destination making its long-awaited return to the circuit, New Plymouth, in New Zealand, in March. Three other destinations, Huatulco (MEX), Karlovy Vary (CZE) and Miyazaki (JPN) are also already confirmed for 2023.

As for the Para triathlon calendar, after its great success earlier this year, the Welsh city of Swansea will again host a stop of the World Triathlon Para Series, along with Yokohama and Devonport (Australia). For the World Triathlon Para Cups, A Coruña and Besançon have also been confirmed for the 2023 season.

On the Multisports calendar, the first stop of the year will be in Norway, with Skeikampen hosting the World Triathlon Winter Championships in March. Ibiza, Spain, will be the host of the next edition of the World Triathlon Multisport Championships.

When it comes to Major Games, Krakow in Poland will host the European Games, while Bali, Indonesia, will be the host city for the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games, with aquathlon part of the programme. Hangzhou, in China, has been confirmed to host the Asian Games in 2023, with the PanAmerican Games taking place in Santiago, Chile in November.

“I am absolutely thrilled with the first races confirmed on the 2023 calendar,” said World Triathlon President and IOC member, Marisol Casado, “It’s a perfect mix between new additions to our portfolio of events, classic races across the world and more Para triathlon venues, giving all of our athletes opportunities to perform at their best.”
