Tokyo 2021 announces new creative team structure for Opening and Closing Ceremonies

The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) announced today details of the new creative team which will design and deliver the programme for next year’s Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Following the postponement of the Games in the wake of the spread of COVID-19 and the accompanying disruptions, we are working to deliver Opening and Closing Ceremonies that will be in tune with the situation next summer. The ceremonies will still be a great celebration to be enjoyed by the athletes and watching world but will likely take a simpler and more restrained approach designed to reflect the overall simplification of the Games and the potential need to still consider COVID-19 countermeasures.

We have therefore decided to create a new team organisation that will allow us to prepare for these ceremonies more quickly and efficiently in the limited time available. The previous seven-member planning team will be replaced with a new structure. Since our announcement on 30 July 2018, they have been dedicated to a very challenging mission of preparing the ceremonies, they are Chief Executive Creative Director NOMURA Mansai, Executive Creative Director for the Olympic Games YAMAZAKI Takashi, Executive Creative Director for the Paralympic Games SASAKI Hiroshi, Creative Director KAWAMURA Genki, Creative Director KURISU Yoshie, Creative Director MIKIKO and Creative Director SHEENA Ringo.

Until the decision to postpone the Games this March, this whole team was charged with formulating the concept, the ideas and the production plans that would ensure the success of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and they contributed various ideas and production plans to help realise this. President MORI and the entire Organising Committee would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and utmost respect for their great efforts.

The COVID-19 situation is constantly evolving and the time remaining until the Games is limited. In view of the revised concept of the Games, it is appropriate to make ceremonial events and programmes simpler and have them in some way reflect and respect the world’s experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. One such attempt was the "One Step Forward - +1 Message - TOKYO2020” programme which was held in July. The programme was produced by SASAKI Hiroshi. We have re-appointed him as an Executive Creative Director.

With Mr. Sasaki’s support, we will stage Opening and Closing Ceremonies that will be remembered for many years to come as symbols of the unity and symbiosis of humankind in its overcoming of the COVID-19 pandemic.

INCREDIBLE TEAMS Hungary’s 1950s water polo team

Over the history of the Olympic Games a number of teams have reached such heights that they can only be described as incredible. Tokyo 2020 revisits the stories of these unforgettable teams and the star players that helped them light up the Olympic Games. In the latest part of our series, we look back at Hungary’s men's water polo team who dominated the pool in the 1950s.

How it started

Hungary has been a powerhouse of water polo since the introduction of the sport at the Olympic Games. The statistics speaks for themselves: they've participated in 22 of 27 Olympic tournaments, winning nine gold, three silver and three bronze. They were also on the Olympic podium without fail between 1928 and 1980. And maybe even more remarkable, they won three golds in a row between 2000 and 2008.

So it was not a surprise to see the Magyars, as Hungarian team were known, performing well during post-World War II Olympic Games. At London 1948, the team earned a silver medal and in Helsinki 1952, they won gold. But it was four years later that the most famous water polo match of Olympic history took place between Hungary and the USSR in Melbourne, creating a legend.

The biggest win

For once, the biggest win was not a final.

At Melbourne 1956, the semi-final between the Soviets and Hungarians has become the famous “blood in the water” game. A few days before the start of the Olympic Games, a revolution began in Budapest, which was repressed by the USSR. In such circumstances, the semi-final was obviously extremely tense between the two countries.

However, the Hungarians dominated the game, leading 4-0. But a few minutes before the end of the game, Valentin Prokopov of the Soviet Union punched Hungarian player Ervin Zador in the face, and there was “blood in the water” - quite literally.

The match was stopped and Hungary declared the winner.

In the final, which Zador could not play because of his injury, Hungary beat Yugoslavia 2–1 to win their fourth Olympic gold medal.

The key players

Beside Zador, who scored five goals in four games in Melbourne in 1956 including two in the famous “blood in the water” game against USSR, two legendary players who were also part of the squad is Dezső Gyarmati, who earned five Olympic medals in total (3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze) and Gyorgy Karpati, who won four medals (3 gold and 1 bronze).

Gyarmati is often considered as the best water polo players in history. He was called the “world’s fastest water polo player” (he could swim a 100m in 58.5 seconds), ambidextrous, could play either back or forward, was a great scorer but also a playmaker.

Karpati, who unfortunately passed away in July this year, was a different kind of player, as he described himself once in an interview: “I wasn’t the most gifted player, I didn’t have the greatest skills and I didn’t have the usual big size. But I wanted it more, much more than anybody else. Perhaps this was the key for my success."

What happened next?

The reality is that many of the Hungarian water polo teams throughout history could be considered “incredible”.

The Magyars practically never stopped being successful at the Olympics, but some teams were particularly impressive.

Led by Tamás Faragó, Hungary earned Olympic medals in 1972, 1976 and 1980. Twenty years later, they won three consecutive gold medals (between 2000 and 2008), becoming only the second team to have an Olympic winning streak in water polo (Great Britain being the other).

And with players like Tibor Benedek, Tamas Kásás, Tamás Molnár or Gergely Kiss, this team won everything possible in the 1998-2008 decade.

While Hungary have not made it onto the Olympic podium since Beijing 2008, their recent gold medal success at the 2020 European Championships, which saw them qualify for Tokyo 2020, might just be the start of something new.

FIRST THREE SPORTS OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED FOR 2023 EUROPEAN GAMES SPORTS PROGRAMME

The European Olympic Committees (EOC) is pleased to announce the first three sports that have been officially confirmed from the previously announced provisional list of sports, that will make up a comprehensive and varied sports programme, including a number of Olympic Sports, for the European Games Kraków-Małopolska 2023.

Canoe, Taekwondo and Modern Pentathlon have been officially included for the third edition of the Games, considered a major stepping stone for Europe’s best athletes en route to the following year’s Olympic Games, in this case Paris 2024.

“We are delighted that the first three sports to be officially added to Kraków-Małopolska will also be at the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris,” said chair of the EOC Coordination Commission for the 2023 European Games Hasan Arat (TUR). “Their inclusion on the programme will offer valuable Olympic qualification opportunities for our European athletes.”

Commenting on the individual sports, EOC Sports Director Peter Brüll highlighted the key benefits of inclusion at the European Games. “Canoe Slalom as well as Modern Pentathlon will make their debuts at the European Games and both sports will act as European Championship events offering qualification opportunities for Paris.”

It will be the second appearance at the Games for Taekwondo, which featured as part of the sports programme in Baku 2015, and will offer the highest number of ranking points for aspiring Olympians at any continental event.

Jozef Liba (SVK), one of two deputy chairs on the EOC’s Coordination Commission, has been tasked with the responsibility of negotiating with the Federations for the make-up of the sports programme.

“We know that it has been a difficult year for federations, and we are very pleased with the discussions and the interest that we have had from sports looking to be a part of the programme in 2023,” Liba said. “It shows the great value that these Games have, and we are looking forward to continued discussions with a number of other federations and announcing more sports for Kraków-Małopolska in the coming weeks.”

Ongoing negotiations continue with the European Federations that have already signed MoUs as well as the others on the provisional sports programme, and all agreements are expected to be finalised by the end of the year.

LEN Champions League Water Polo, Day 4 – Barceloneta is to have the happiest Christmas

Barceloneta can put three wins under the Christmas tree as the Spanish team offered a brilliant performance against Brescia. Shutting out the Italians for more then 13 minutes, the 2014 champions won their third game with their great defending in the first place – so they will restart their Champions League campaign from the top spot in Group B. In the other games, title-holder Ferencvaros equalled Recco’s season scoring record of 19 goals from yesterday, while Dinamo surprised Jadran in the clash of the underdogs.

Group B – Budapest (HUN) Round 3: Dinamo Tbilisi (GEO) v Jadran Herceg Novi (MNE) 11-8, Waspo 98 Hannover (GER) v FTC-Telekom Budapest (HUN) 6-19, AN Brescia (ITA) v Zodiac CNA Barceloneta (ESP) 6-8

Standings: 1. Barceloneta 9, 2. Brescia 6, 3. Ferencvaros 6, 4. Dinamo 3, 5. Jadran 3, 6. Hannover 0

Barceloneta spends the winter as the leader of Group B after bringing down Brescia in the battle of the last two unbeaten sides in Budapest. It was an even game in the first half, with some luck Brescia took the lead twice but Barceloneta hit back with a double in 89 seconds for 2-3. The Italians equalised for 3-3 but Alberto Munarriz gave back the lead for the Spaniards shortly before halftime.

The landscape changed dramatically in the third as the Spanish defence got even tighter and they killed one man-down after the other. And it was a real defensive masterpiece as Brescia stood 1 for 8 in man-ups after three periods and Dani Lopez didn’t even have to save a single shot in man-down since his mates blocked the shots or forced errors from the Italian offence. At the other end, Munarriz was simply unstoppable, he netted two in a span of 52 seconds in the third for 3-6 and added his fourth in the last quarter for 3-7, a magnificent blast from action.

To join the show, Lopez came up with two saves in back-to-back man-downs in the fourth – he finished with an amazing percentage of 68.8% (13 saves on 19 shots) – before Angelos Vlachopoulos broke Brescia’s long silence of 13:09 minutes with a smart action shot from the distance. But they couldn’t come closer as they missed their 10th 6 of 5 after a time-out and Alvaro Granados’ brilliant goal from the wing decided the outcome (4-8). Though the Italians pulled two back in the dying minutes, this time Barceloneta could overcome its nemesis – in the Champions League prelims they played 6 games since 2014, Brescia won 4 and two were tied. Now it was Barceloneta’s turn so they are the only team leaving Budapest with three wins after the first tournament.

Ferencvaros bounced back from its second round defeat to Brescia and enjoyed a comfortable cruise over F8 host Hannover. Though the Germans had some fine players in their line-up, it was visible that, due to the home lockdown since September, they couldn’t get into shape to play three matches in as many days. Also, their young reserve goalie Kevin Gotze was unable to handle the Magyars’ skilled shooters who tricked him a couple of times. Hannover could score its first goal late in the second, after 13:05 minutes at 0-6, so the match was just as calm as the empty Duna Arena. While the title-holders equalled Recco’s scoring record from yesterday – also set against a German side Spandau –, one might also note Champions League rookie Vendel Vigvari’s 4 goals in the match: the 19 year-old was among the last youngsters raised and educated by the late Magyar legend Tibor Benedek.

A bit surprisingly, Dinamo upended Jadran in the game of the underdogs. Jadran was perhaps mentally fresh from beating Hannover in the previous evening but the young players looked a bit tired since they had approximately 16 hours to recover. Still, they were in the game, led 3-4 and looked settled when a silly mistake pushed them into a downward spiral. After a turnover foul, they got the ball but the old instincts kicked in and a defender passed back towards the goalkeeper though the new rules allow taking the free throw wherever the ball is – Sandro Adeishvili, the centre whom the fault was called against, thanked the gift and finished the one-on-one.

From that point Jadran fell apart, lost the third 3-0 and could hit next after a drought of 10:35 minutes. Though in the fourth they managed to narrow the gap to 7-6 but a huge blast from Marco Jelaca right from the next possession put Dinamo back on track. A minute later it was 9-6 and there was no way back for the Montenegrins. This was the second win for Dinamo in the league, last season they beat Marseille while losing nine, now they look more composed and being ready for even more in springtime.

LEN Champions League Water Polo Preliminaries Quotes Day 4

BUDAPEST GROUP B – Brescia (ITA) v Barceloneta (ESP) 6-8

Alessandro Bovo, coach, Brescia:

“What was the difference between today and yesterday? The answer is Barceloneta, a team with great players, a great coach and great tactics. Their defence was very good, we couldn’t make our shots in the man-ups, they were very well organised in all parts. It wasn’t easy to play three matches in a row, but in general I’m satisfied with our performance.”

Maro Jokovic, player, Brescia:

“We lost because of our man-ups. Dani Lopez didn’t even have to save a shot in man-down in three periods and this tells the story. Barceloneta is a great team, their defence are excellent, they have the will to help each other and that made the difference.”

Jesus Martin, coach, Barceloneta:

“All credit goes to Dani Lopez, he was instrumental to our win. I’m really happy with my team, they played well in defence and I think we did what we had to in offence too. It’s not easy to beat Brescia so we had to come up with our best. Three wins after a long break in the Champions League, we cannot wish for any more.”

Dani Lopez, goalie, Barceloneta:

“I’m satisfied with the match and with all our results. Brescia is one of the favourites for the title and today we did a great match and clinched three more points. I think one of the keys of our win was our incredible defence in man-down. We didn’t let Brescia make any counter-attack either. This bubble tournament is tough with three matches in three days but we are in good physical shape so was ready for the challenge. We are happy with everything so far.”

BUDAPEST GROUP B – Hannover (GER) v Ferencvaros (HUN) 6-19

Karsten Seehafer, coach, Hannover:

“Of course, the lockdown since September did not help, ten weeks without any game, not three in three days, for us that was impossible to prepare for. Still, even in this shape we should have played better our man-ups as nothing was applied what we practiced. Now most of our players will leave to start practicing with their respective national teams for the Olympic Qualification Tournament and they will only come back for a week before the next tournament, so we won’t have too much time again…”

Julian Real, player, Hannover:

“First I want to say that here in Budapest the organisation was excellent, we felt very secure in the bubble, away from the coronavirus. It is good that water polo is back in Europe and we can play again. The games were terrible for us, we didn’t do our best. I think we must have won yesterday, today was OK as we played against one of the favourites. Still, I think we conceded too many goals from Ferencvaros, scoring six or seven is fine but got way too many. We felt tired because of the tough game against Jadran and we didn’t have enough time to recover. Maybe three games in three days is a problem but if you think of the Olympic qualification where you play seven games in seven days, you see you have to be prepared.”

Zsolt Varga, coach, Ferencvaros:

“Even though today’s match looked easy but I think I can be satisfied with our defence, that was the key for our big win. The team started regaining its composure in this tournament now we have time to start the real rebuilding process. We needed these games in the Champions League to see what mistakes we need to correct and what we need to focus on to reach the expected level.”

Vendel Vigvari, player, Ferencvaros:

“These were my first three Champions League matches and I immediately felt on my skin that this another level. It was a long time ago that I played in international matches (in age group) and it’s clear that there is a large room for development for me. In Ferencvaros, every day is a challenge but I love challenges, that’s why I chose this great team. Regarding this tournament, I think we started to take the right path. We won those games which we were supposed to, and we had some positives against Brescia too. I think we have enough time to grow as a team in the coming months.”

BUDAPEST GROUP B – Dinamo (GEO) v Jadran (MNE) 11-8

Zurab Rurua, coach, Dinamo

“I am very happy and very proud of my team, this a big win for Dinamo and for our country. Today we won because the players kept everything we agreed before the match, they were disciplined and played according to the tactics. This win means a lot for us, we will come back to March as not the bottom ranked team in this group.”

Andria Bitadze, player, Dinamo:

“This is our second year in Champions League so we are still a new team on this big stage. Last year we managed only three points in ten matches when we beat Marseille, this season our target is to improve and get more points and wins. Because I think Dinamo has a good potential and can become one of the best teams in the world. We just need time, good trainings, great workouts. This is a happy day for Georgian water polo, for this young team as this victory is very important for us. These are the first three points in this competition but I’m sure not the last ones.”

Petar Radanovic, coach, Jadran:

“It’s a bit of inexperience, it’s a bit of tiredness as we had only 16 hours between our two matches. In the life of such a young team there are ups and downs, today we have mostly downs plus there were other things but I don’t want to complain of the referees. I have to congratulate to Dinamo, they played very well and deserved the win. We have to work a lot and I really believe that we could improve for the next tournament in March.”

Marko Petkovic, captain, Jadran:

“We can be satisfied with our three points. If you offer that us in advance, we would have signed off for it but now, at the end, I cannot be satisfied because even if we got those points but we did not play as we should have. There are a lot of things we have to do better and not commit the same mistakes in every game. Now we have some time to rest and hope to be ready for the next tournament. I should say, that these three days tournaments are not easy since you don’t have time to prepare tactically for the second and third day. Anyway, it is the same for all teams so it’s not an excuse.”
