World Aquatics Championships will now feature Argentina in the Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Tournaments

Following the PanAm Aquatics Water Polo Open Championships in Bauru, Brazil, where Argentina placed third last month in both the men’s and women’s tournaments, the Argentinians looked to have just missed out on competing at the world championships as a continental qualifier. Only the first two teams from the tournament in Bauru were guaranteed a spot in Fukuoka.

However, with Brazil recently pulling out of the men’s and women’s water polo tournaments at the World Aquatics Championships, Argentina will now play in their place in both tournaments this July in Japan.

This will be the second time for both the men’s and women’s Argentine water polo national teams will be at the World Aquatics Championships. The men previously qualified for the Kazan 2015 edition, finishing 16th. The women played at last year’s World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, placing 12th.

Argentina joins the USA and Canada in representing their continental region at this year’s World Aquatics Championships. The USA women earned automatic entry as the defending world champions while the American men gained an automatic qualifier spot by placing second at the 2022 Water Polo Super Finals. Canadian booked their team’s tickets to Fukuoka by winning both the men’s and women’s continental qualifier tournaments in Bauru.

In the men’s tournament, Argentina will begin their play in Group C, competing against Croatia, Hungary and the host nation Japan. In the women’s tournament, Argentina will play in Group C against Greece, Italy and South Africa.

Water polo will run from 16-29 July at the World Aquatics Championships, with the world's 32 best teams (16 men's/16 women's) vying for the global title.
