FINA development programmes continue to benefit countries with high potential.
The
Papua New Guinea Swimming Federation hosted a FINA Open Water School for
officials in May, during which basic knowledge about the sport was taught to
the participants. 23 officials from the region, looking to improve their
effectiveness, took part in the two-day programme in Port Moresby (PNG) in
the Pacific Ocean. The same group also attended a FINA Swimming School for
officials prior to the open water school.
Also
in Oceania, the Guam Swimming Federation welcomed swimming officials for five
days in Hagatna (GUM). The course included an introduction to the FINA
structure as well as the general principles required by the profession. The
rules of each stroke were discussed and supplemented by the FINA officials
training video. Practical application of skills was done during the two-day
Guam Championships.
On
the other side of the world, the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association
hosted a seven-day Swimming and Open Water Clinic led by well-known coach
James Richardson. The primary purpose of the course was to focus on the
stroke technique and teaching methods. Each participant had the opportunity
to work with athletes to develop their teaching techniques in a live
situation under the supervision of the lecturer.
