Paralympics Ireland Welcome Tokyo2020 Paralympic Games Postponement

Paralympics Ireland welcomes the decision of the Japanese Prime Minister, Abe Shinzo and the International Olympic Committee with the full support of the International Paralympic Committee to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games to 2021.  The Paralympic Games will now take place at a date beyond 2020 but no later than the Summer of 2021.
Postponing the Paralympic Games is a decision that was not taken lightly and was done in the best interests of the athletes, their support teams and the millions of spectators that were due to attend the games.
Paralympics Ireland supports IPC’s decision and the clarity it gives athletes and organisers regarding the future of the games. We will now implement our contingency plans to ensure that Irish Paralympic athletes will be supported through this process, mitigate the effects of the cancellation and to put in place new programmes to help athletes realign their training and competition schedules.

International Paralympic Committee (IPC) reaction Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games postponed

Following the decision to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Andrew Parsons gave the following reaction:
“Postponing the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games as a result of the global COVID-19 outbreak is absolutely the right thing to do. The health and well-being of human life must always be our number one priority and staging a sport event of any kind during this pandemic is simply not possible.
“Sport is not the most important thing right now, preserving human life is. It is essential therefore that all steps are taken to try and limit the spread of this disease.
“The COVID-19 outbreak is now impacting nearly every country in the world and the number of known cases has increased almost five times over in the last 10 days to 375,000.
“At a time when many major communities around the world are in lockdown, with workplaces and shops closed and people urged not to leave their own homes, continuing to pursue the dream of the Tokyo 2020 Games happening this year does not make sense; postponement is the only logical option.
“By taking this decision now, everyone involved in the Paralympic Movement, including all Para athletes, can fully focus on their own health and well-being and staying safe during this unprecedented and difficult time.
“When the Paralympic Games do happen in Tokyo next year, they will be a spectacular global celebration of humanity coming together again as one.
“In the meantime, we will liaise and work closely with our athlete community, National Paralympic Committees and International Federation impacted by this postponement.”
Chelsey Gotell, Chairperson of the IPC Athletes’ Council, said: “From an athlete viewpoint this is the right decision for the athletes, the Games and the wider Paralympic Movement. We all now have greater clarity about when the Games will take place, and this is very welcome news for the global Para athlete community.
“We are happy that the IOC and Japan’s Prime Minster Abe took this decision so quickly. It enables athletes to take a step back and focus on the current situation at hand.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, postponed to 2021

The International Olympic Committee, International Paralympic Committee and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee have just announced that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games have been postponed to no later than the summer of 2021. “In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community”, said the IOC.
“We fully support this decision, and the whole World Triathlon staff is now working in close cooperation with the IOC, the IPC, the Tokyo Organising Committee and all the other stakeholders to help find the best dates for the Games to take place, as well as trying to find answers to all the questions raised by this difficult situation”, said World Triathlon President and IOC member, Marisol Casado.
“We understand that there are lots of questions unanswered at the moment, and we are working in all scenarios to give answers to all of them, and communicate all the different scenarios and solutions to all parties as soon as we can”, she said.
The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, and the Prime Minister of Japan, Abe Shinzo, held a conference call this morning to discuss the constantly changing environment with regard to COVID-19 and the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. They were joined by Mori Yoshiro, the President of the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee; the Olympic Minister, Hashimoto Seiko; the Governor of Tokyo, Koike Yuriko; the Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission, John Coates; IOC Director General Christophe De Kepper; and the IOC Olympic Games Executive Director, Christophe Dubi.
President Bach and Prime Minister Abe expressed their shared concern about the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, and what it is doing to people’s lives and the significant impact it is having on global athletes’ preparations for the Games. In a very friendly and constructive meeting, the two leaders praised the work of the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee and noted the great progress being made in Japan to fight against COVID-19.
The unprecedented and unpredictable spread of the outbreak has seen the situation in the rest of the world deteriorating. Yesterday, the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the COVID-19 pandemic is “accelerating”. There are more than 375,000 cases now recorded worldwide and in nearly every country, and their number is growing by the hour.
In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community.
The leaders agreed that the Olympic Games in Tokyo could stand as a beacon of hope to the world during these troubled times and that the Olympic flame could become the light at the end of the tunnel in which the world finds itself at present. Therefore, it was agreed that the Olympic flame will stay in Japan. It was also agreed that the Games will keep the name Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Tokyo 2020 releases the latest Odaiba Marine Park water test results

The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) has announced the results of the water quality and temperature surveys from July/August this year, conducted at Odaiba Marine Park, the venue for the Tokyo 2020 marathon swimming and triathlon events.
The test results revealed that, with the exception of one day during the twelve-day period of the test events, from August 7 to 18, the use of the underwater screens reduced the quantity of coliforms inside the screened areas to within the limits stipulated by the relevant international federations. This was despite levels outside the screened area exceeding the targeted levels on four of the days owing to heavy rainfall. The levels of enterococci bacteria within the screened area were also within agreed limits. Tokyo 2020 plans to deploy triple-layer underwater screens during the Tokyo 2020 Games to ensure providing even better conditions than those resulting from the single screens used in the latest survey.
The surveys were once again conducted on days that corresponded to the scheduled dates of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. During those periods there were no instances where the maximum water temperature of 31.0C was exceeded in any of the measured areas. The maximum temperature recorded was 30.8C, and the water temperature inside the screens was on average approximately 0.8C higher than the temperature outside.
Based on the results of these latest surveys, Tokyo 2020 will continue to make all possible efforts in their preparations to ensure that all athletes can perform at their best.

Measures to Secure Water Quality and Temperature in 2020
Installation of triple screens
The single underwater screens were shown to be effective in inhibiting levels of E. coli during this summer’s
test event; Tokyo 2020 plans to further improve the water quality through the installation of triple screens
during the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Operation of underwater screens to prevent water temperature rise
We will consider operating methods that can help suppress water temperatures, such as allowing the
underwater screens to float, and opening them when weather is good.
Further measures to improve water quality and reduce water temperature
In collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tokyo 2020 will continue their analysis of the
causes of poor water quality and odours, and they will review methods for ensuring appropriate water
quality and temperature with experts, outsourcing agreed solutions to specialist operators.
Consideration on bringing forward the start time of competitions
Triathlon events (men, women and mixed relay) are being considered to starting earlier by one hour. IOC, IF and Tokyo 2020 are discussing for the approval by the IOC Executive Board meeting in December.

Agitos Foundation Road to Tokyo 2020 workshops kick off in Japan

With 279 days to the start of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, the Agitos Foundation, together with the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee and the Japanese Paralympic Committee, have launched the first of the Road to Tokyo 2020 workshops in Tsukuba, Japan.
The activities, held in the framework of the Agitos Foundation Road to the Games programme, aims to increase the capacity and sport technical knowledge of National Paralympic Committees, to elevate the technical knowledge of coaches and athletes and promote the awareness of the Paralympic Movement and its great stories.
From 20-22 November, 42 coaches from 16 Asian countries attended judo, Para archery, Para powerlifting and Para taekwondo coaching courses at the University of Tsukuba, one of the most prestigious in Japan.
Participants came from Bhutan, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Singapore, Tajikistan, Yemen, Vietnam and hosts Japan. Courses were led by educators Chakir Chelbat and Usman Dildar (Para taekwondo), Dan Kent (Para powerlifting), Ian Johns (judo), Vincent Hybois and Martin Rogers (Para archery).
Two other events are set to happen next year, also aiming to train participants from Asia. In February, it is intended to host Para swimming, Para table tennis and Para badminton coaches, and sport administrators, in May, a training camp for Para athletics and Para swimming athletes and coaches.
Rita van Driel, Agitos Foundation Executive Committee Chairperson, said:

“For the Agitos Foundation, the commitment of host cities to elevate the Paralympic Movement, promote inclusion and increase participation in Para sport is a key opportunity to partner and achieve common goals. We have no doubt that Japan will deliver outstanding Games and we are glad to join forces and make sure they leave a legacy for Para sport in Asia.

“I want to thank Tokyo 2020, the Japanese Paralympic Committee, the University of Tsukuba and the Japanese Travel Bureau for the support they have given to this event, as well as the educators from IBSA Judo, World Archery, World Para Powerlifting and World Taekwondo.”

“All participants from 16 Asian NPCs could learn a lot about the Paralympic sports and coaching and elevate their knowledge of those over these three days. I believe it will have a significant impact on the development of the Paralympic movement in their countries after they return.

“Leveraging the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, we will contribute to the promotion of the Paralympic Movement with the support of our partners and progress towards the realisation of a more inclusive society.” 
Tomohiro Ida, Secretary General of the Japanese Paralympic Committee, said:

“The Japanese Paralympic Committee has a vision, which is to create a vigorous and inclusive society through Para sport. Based on that vision, we have been offering several programmes to improve the capacity of NPCs, and to develop skills and performances of coaches and athletes.

“It is our great pleasure and we hope this opportunity will help them to develop their coaching skills and enhance knowledge about their sport, as well as to create a new network among participants and instructors.”
The Road to Tokyo 2020 is part of the Agitos Foundation Road to the Games initiatives, that were initiated in the build-up to the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games. Since then there has been activities linked to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, the Sao Paulo 2017 Youth Parapan American Games, the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games and the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games.
